Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War has now received its first season of content, which brings new guns, new maps, and new modes to not just the game but also battle-royale title Call of Duty: Warzone, thanks to the two being integrated.
Possibly the biggest inclusion to Call of Duty: Warzone is its new map, Rebirth Island, an old Soviet base that’s been repurposed into a testing facility for the deadly Nova 6 gas and is also heavily tied into the backstory of one of the new playable operators, Stitch.
Right behind that, though, is a brand-new game mode set on Rebirth Island that’s expected to completely change how people play Warzone: Resurgence. It was first announced as part of the big blog post about the Season 1 update.
Unlike a normal Warzone match, Resurgence does away with the Gulag, the location where players who have been killed go and must fight each other to earn the right to return to the match. Rather than instantly eliminate killed players, though, Resurgence allows anyone who dies to respawn after a time limit has passed, provided the rest of their teammates don’t die in the interim.
When a player manages to kill an opponent, the rest of the opposing team’s members will briefly have their locations revealed, encouraging players to quickly hunt them down. So, players who find themselves a teammate or two down will want to try and play things safe and maybe avoid conflict altogether until their teammates respawn. This mode’s ruleset definitely shakes up the formula, but it’s too early to tell how popular the mode will become with players.
It’s also not the only thing Warzone has now. Thanks to the aforementioned integration with Black Ops Cold War, players have access to over 30 of Cold War‘s weapons. Progression is also now shared across both games and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, so any Battle Pass progression made in one game counts for the other two as well.
As for Cold War, it’s received several new modes and maps of its own. And while Season 1 has only been out for a day, Treyarch is already teasing Season 2, confirming that it will include a new Zombies map, which is expected to drop at some point in either February or March.
However, there’s no knowing if all this new content will win back some players’ favor. Cold War, in particular, has been harshly criticized by fans since it launched and it still has a shockingly low user score on Metacritic.
Call of Duty: Warzone is available on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
