Magic: The Gathering Kaldheim Spoilers Reveal New Rare Land Cycle

Magic: The Gathering players have had a few months with Zendikar Rising already, but they’ll have to wait a bit longer before getting their hands on the next big standard legal content drop. The viking/nordic-themed set, Kaldheim, arrives in early February, but that does mean that it is time for spoiler season to kick-off.

Oftentimes the earliest February set spoilers don’t arrive until Christmas morning, but it looks like Santa arrived early this year. The first Magic: The Gathering Kaldheim spoilers are here and they have confirmed suspicions that Wizards of the Coast is delivering another round of modal double-faced cards to help optimize land fixing for the Standard Magic format.

The new land cycle will look very familiar to players who are currently engaged with the Standard format or who have been drafting Zendikar Rising. These modal double-faced land cards are very powerful and allow players to smooth out land draws without including more basics in their deck than necessary. They may lack some of the raw power of prior land cycles like the manlands or fetchlands, but don’t overlook the value of these when it comes to optimizing Standard decks with a splash that would usually require an unwanted basic in the decklist.

More spoilers will be arriving throughout the holiday season and leading up to the launch of the new set in February. So far, there has also been confirmation of two new planeswalkers and the return of the Saga mechanic that will look familiar to players who were active during the Dominaria set a few years back.

The Standard card pool is still a little shallow after the big fall rotation, so it will be very interesting to see what other new tool sets and mechanics Kaldheim is going to add to the mix when it arrives in early 2021. Whatever it brings, players will need to study up on the spoilers and any new rules to be ready for all of the exciting pre-release events that will accompany the launch. It’s likely that in-person events will still be off the table, so fans can expect to turn to Magic Arena or Magic: The Gathering Online to help celebrate the launch with sealed tournaments and booster drafts.

Magic: The Gathering – Kaldheim is scheduled to release on February 5, 2021. Other Magic: The Gathering sets are available now at game shops or digitally through Magic Arena.
