Netflix loves its original shows, and in an era where everyone and their grandma has a streaming platform, having a unique selling point is more important than ever. So its no surprise that the company is continuing to pump out new originals based on whatever property it can get its hands on. Netflix’s most recent announcement just so happens to be a brand new show titled Shadow and Bone, an eight episode series based on Leigh Bardugo’s bestselling Grishaverse novels.
The first of these novels was named, like the upcoming show, Shadow and Bone, and featured protagonist Alina Starkov. Set in a fantasy world where her home, the Kingdom of Ravka, is a perpetually dark place cut off from most of the world, and travelling to other places is dangerous. Alina Starkov, an orphan, discovers she has a unique power that makes her important. She is rushed to a place where she can train her powers alongside others with unique abilities, but there are other agendas at play, and that the people around her may have ulterior motives. Alina has to come to terms with her own surprising power and decide what her place is in the world.
There are two more books in the Shadow and Bone trilogy, as well as another duology titled Six of Crows, which takes place in the same universe, but on a different timeline. The Netflix show intends to cover all five books to some extent, blending the stories together into a more cohesive package. Leigh Bardugo is also involved in the project and talked about blending the two narratives: “We’ve taken the stories of Shadow and Bone and the characters of Six of Crows and we’ve brought them together in what I think will be a really unexpected way. Eric [Heisserer] and our writers’ room and our directors have built something entirely new that still somehow stays true to the characters and to the heart of the stories.”
The series is currently planned to hit Netflix in April of 2021, and Bardugo was quite excited about the production. “When you start an endeavor like this, you don’t know what’s going to happen. To have your expectations surpassed, to see magic on top of magic, and to see things come to life in a way that is bigger and more beautiful than you ever could have hoped, it’s impossible to fathom.” Hopefully audiences feel the same way when the show finally hits streaming.
Shadow and Bone will be on Netflix in April of 2021.
