It appears that a significant amount of The Last of Us Part 2 story spoilers have leaked online, revealing the plot of Naughty Dog’s highly anticipated sequel in vivid detail.
It is rumored that the spoilers were leaked by a disgruntled Naughty Dog employee who took to YouTube after failing to settle a payment dispute, although this has yet to be confirmed. The spoilers range from a leaked level list to cutscene footage and essentially detail the game’s entire plot.

Although the original video has been removed, a comprehensive breakdown of its contents is still available to read on ResetEra. This post features information on who you play in The Last of Us Part 2, as well as details concerning its plot points.
The first point of order states that you play the first half of the game as Ellie, which is something fans likely already expected. However, according to the leaked level list, you play the other half of the game as Abby, a new character who is speculated to be the daughter of one of the Firefly surgeons Joel kills at the end of The Last of Us. Although her motivations aren’t necessarily made explicit, it would seem that she seeks revenge on Joel and Ellie for murdering her parent.
One of the final levels on the list is named “abby-ellie-fight,” with the fight itself being explicitly detailed in the ResetEra post. It would appear that once the player perspective shifts from Ellie to Abby, killing Ellie becomes your new goal. In fact, Abby kills Joel relatively early in the game, brutally caving his head in with a golf club. This is further proven by the fact Dina references Joel’s death later in the game: when Ellie says “I don’t plan on dying,” Dina responds, “Well neither did Jesse, or Joel.”
This obviously implies that Jesse, Dina’s ex and Ellie’s friend, is also killed. Although the reasons for his split with Dina are still unknown, the leak reveals that Dina is pregnant with Jesse’s baby, who she intends to raise with Ellie.
The fight between Ellie and Abby was also broken down by another ResetEra user who saw the video before it was taken down. Apparently, Abby punches Ellie repeatedly before attempting to choke her, at which point Dina intervenes. Dina attacks Abby with a knife, but is interrupted by Lev, the teenager with the shaved head from the Paris Games Week 2017 trailer. After Lev shoots Dina with an arrow, Abby knocks Dina unconscious – the breakdown emphatically stresses that she is unconscious, not dead. Although Abby threatens to kill Dina in front of a fading Ellie, she is convinced otherwise by Lev.
That concludes the confirmed leak, but there is also some extra speculation from a previous leak that, if true, helps to contextualize what may seem like a story from left field. Apparently Joel ruined Abby’s life by killing her parents, and the shift in protagonists is supposed to represent a perpetuation of the cycle of violence Neil Druckmann says The Last of Us is founded upon. Although players grow attached to Joel and Ellie in the original game, Joel is quite obviously not a good person, and viewing Ellie from another person’s perspective several years in the future is an attempt to showcase that she has become a baddie, too.
This speculation also supposes that Joel and Ellie aren’t together at the beginning of the game, and that Joel returns to Ellie after hearing about Jesse’s death at the hands of a cultish group, likely companions of Abby and Lev. After killing Joel, Abby decides to spare Ellie, but Ellie continues to kill Abby’s friends in an attempt to escape (this probably refers to the aforementioned situation with Dina).
Again, this extra information is more of a speculative nature, but it guesses that Abby will eventually kill Ellie, discover that the cycle of violence and desire for revenge only caused her to lose even more loved ones, and conclude with a loose implication that hunting duties have now shifted back to Ellie’s friends, seeking to avenge her by killing Abby. It’s worth noting that it says Dina and Jesse survive, but the legitimate leak confirms Jesse’s death, so it should be taken with a pinch of salt.
To summarize: you play the first half of the game as Ellie, during which Joel and Jesse are killed by Abby. Midway through the game, protagonistic duties shift to Abby and the player is tasked with seeing Ellie as the antagonist. Your new goal is to hunt Ellie down, and although you spare the lives of Ellie and Dina initially, it seems that you eventually kill Ellie as the story progresses. It appears the ending will not offer any sort of closure, only an open invitation for cyclical violence to continue. The ending is effectively a statement that meaningless violence doesn’t, and won’t, end.
