PlayStation Removes Cyberpunk 2077 From Store | Game Rant

The launch of Cyberpunk 2077 isn’t going smoothly. Even after CD Projekt RED released a formal apology encouraging disappointed fans to request a refund from their place of purchase, Cyberpunk 2077  owners on last-generation consoles are understandably frustrated with the company’s lack of communication following the game’s underwhelming technical performance. To add further insult to injury, Sony has now confirmed that it is removing Cyberpunk 2077 from the PlayStation Store until further notice.

Cyberpunk 2077 has become one of the most hyped games of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One console generation, despite the developer never revealing how the game would perform on those systems. Finally, in the month before the release of the game, CD Projekt Red revealed footage of the title running on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X via backwards compatibility, and PlayStation 4 Pro and Xbox One X consoles. Notably absent was footage of Cyberpunk 2077 on base PS4 and Xbox One consoles.

Earlier this week, the company’s leaders released a statement apologizing to fans for neglecting last-gen console versions of the game, and urged fans to either wait for further patches or to request refunds from PlayStation and Xbox support teams. Fans learned that CD Projekt Red had seemingly not contacted Sony regarding this statement, as PlayStation support was refusing refunds. Now, Sony has released an official statement claiming that it intends to provide full refunds for Cyberpunk 2077 on PlayStation 4, however, the game will also be outright removed from purchase until further notice.

Typically, PlayStation only allows digital refunds on software that has not yet been downloaded onto PlayStation 4 or 5 consoles. Once a player has downloaded the game onto a console, they are ineligible for a refund. Due to the sheer volume of consumers disappointed in Cyberpunk 2077‘s launch, PlayStation support has confirmed that all customers that have purchased Cyberpunk 2077 are eligible for full refunds, even those who have played the game for hours on end or even completed it.

Furthermore, the announcement of Cyberpunk 2077‘s removal from the PlayStation Store means that those wanting to purchase the game for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 for the foreseeable future will likely have to purchase a physical copy. While CD Projekt Red has claimed that it intends to release major patches for the title in the coming months, this announcement likely means the company will likely aim to release these patches even sooner than intended, due to the game’s removal and refund option resulting in a major impact on Cyberpunk’s sales. Sony has not confirmed when Cyberpunk 2077 will be available to purchase again on the PlayStation Store, however, it will likely be after the game receives major performance improvements on the base PlayStation 4 console.

Cyberpunk 2077 is out now for PC, PlayStation 4 (physically,) and Xbox One. The game will release for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X in 2021.
