Bungie Reacts to US Space Force Guardians Announcement

This week, the United States Space Force revealed that it had selected the term Guardians to refer to its uniformed members. Naturally, the announcement caught the attention of Destiny fans, considering the similarities in that the main characters in this franchise are also called Guardians and have a long history of spacefaring adventures through the Milky Way Galaxy. There were more than a few replies to the reveal tweet referencing the game and the characters involved in this world.

While the announcement has apparently arrived after a lengthy process behind the scenes, the replies and terminology being used has also caught the attention of many Bungie employees as well. This should be too surprising as inside of both Destiny games, player characters known as Guardians explore the solar system and defend Earth against various alien threats. Obviously this announcement is unintended publicity for Bungie’s hit game.

Bungie CEO Pete Parsons responded to the announcement with an OMG, and posting the initial Destiny opening cinematic showing humans exploring and discovering The Traveler on Mars. Community manager dmg04 appeared to be in disbelief of the announcement saying that it couldn’t be real while the official Destiny 2 Twitter account followed up with a pun of its own saying, “Almost as if it’s our Destiny.” Other replies have hinted that there are probably more than a few Destiny fans working at the organization.

For now, the U.S. Space Force has confirmed that the term Guardians was selected due to its long history in space operations and its origins in the original command motto of Air Force Space Command, “Guardians of the High Frontier.” In addition to that legacy and heritage, the name also applies to the organization’s overall mission to protect the people and interest of the United States and allies.

While the Destiny franchise seems to have been the most popular reference and response to the reveal, there were plenty of other games and franchises that were brought up as well. Another big one was Guardians of the Galaxy, while an appropriate name for the Space Force, fans were actually referencing the Marvel characters and their recent exploits in the MCU. Even the official Halo Twitter account got involved, adding a gif of a massive guardian enemy forming from the initial reveal trailer of Halo 5. With such a rich legacy in the gaming sector, there’s no doubt that the name is a big hit with players.

Destiny 2 is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
