For the second time in less than a month, Microsoft is sending digital Xbox Gift Cards to a random selection of lucky Xbox users. In November for Black Friday, some gamers received a message through the Xbox app on their smartphone that included a code for a $5 Microsoft Store gift card. The surprise present was apparently only for users of the regular Xbox app and not the Xbox Game Pass app.
This month, perhaps to coincide with the Xbox Countdown Sale currently happening on the Microsoft Store or perhaps just in the spirit of the season, Microsoft is again handing out an unexpected gift, this time through email. According to a Reddit post, Xbox users who are subscribed to the Xbox Newsletter should look for an email titled “Gifts for Gamers Made Easy.” The sender address for the newsletter is xboxreps@engage.xbox.com.
Towards the bottom of the newsletter, there will be an animated image of a green Xbox trophy with the heading, “Gifts for them, rewards for you.” Next to the trophy, keen-eyed readers should spot a little jiggling gift-wrapped box. Clicking on the present will result in a code for a $5 Xbox Gift Card and a message that states, “You’ve Found the Hidden Surprise in the Xbox Newsletter!”
Like last month, the number of free codes is limited and not everybody will receive one, and the gift cards are being emailed to newsletter subscribers all over the world. Microsoft occasionally rewards users of its various services with unexpected gifts like this. To subscribe to the Xbox Newsletter, click on the Xbox user icon in the upper right corner of the screen at xbox.com, click the ellipses to reveal a secondary menu, select “Xbox Settings,” and go to “Contact preferences.”
The Xbox Series X launched in November to great success, selling an estimated 1.2 to 1.4 million units in the first 24 hours, according to VGChartz. In fact, on the day of the next-gen console’s release, the BBC reported that the UK experienced record-breaking internet bandwidth usage. According to a number of internet service providers, this spike was due to the massive number of people downloading Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, and Destiny 2, among others.
While those titles should keep gamers occupied for a good amount of time, some players may be interested in picking up another game or two. While the free $5 Xbox Gift Card won’t cover the cost of most games, it will get people to the Microsoft Store to check out the array of titles on sale for the holidays. The Xbox Countdown Sale began on Friday, December 18 and will run through January 3, 2021.
