GAME Reveals Mario and Call of Duty Themed Perfumes | Game Rant

UK retailer GAME has just unveiled a rather interesting new product. The store is selling unisex fragrances of Mario and Call of Duty, kind of. Video game fans can purchase GAME’s 200ml bottles of fragrances online right now for £19.99. The deal is exclusive and limited, so if anyone is interested they will need to act fast.

While the fragrances aren’t officially licensed, it is clear that GAME is making a gigantic and nonsubtle nod to gaming icons. The perfumes are based on the plumpy plumber and one of the biggest multiplayer games of the year (and all-time really) with Mario and Call of Duty.

The Mario-looking product is called Eau De Plumber and it is described as being “painstakingly blended with deep, toadstooly undertones, with high tones of peach and daisy.” On top of the description, the product’s design is Mario-themed. The item itself is a bottle that has a mustache and red hat, which of course is Mario’s patented look. Even if it doesn’t have Nintendo’s seal of approval, there is no avoiding that this fragrance is based on Mario and his amazing games.

The second fragrance is called FPS, which stands for First Person Scent. While this one is a bit less obvious that it is Call of Duty-themed, the frag grenade looking bottle and slightly gunpowdery smell point to the perfume being based on some of the best first-person shooters, especially military-based ones like Call of Duty. Another possible name for the FPS perfume could have been “Frag”rance.

For GAME’s first attempt at video game-themed perfumes, choosing Mario and Call of Duty certainly makes a lot of sense. In terms of beloved video game characters, no one can really get in the same stratosphere as Mario. Meanwhile, the Call of Duty games has become a mainstream pop-culture entity even outside of the standard gaming culture. Both IPs are remarkably popular, although it is fair to wonder how nice a plumber who eats mushrooms smell, as well as highly-trained soldiers in the middle of battle.

The perfumes are certainly unique, and the cleverness and creativity in the names, bottle designs, and descriptions are great, even if it borrows from intellectual properties that GAME does not own. It is possible that this idea is one to combat the massive drop of physical video game sales in the UK and beyond.

As stores like Game Stop try to redesign stores to change with the times, and game sales find success digitally, GAME seems to be thinking outside the box. If these silly but fun perfumes catch on, GAME could find niche success with limited-time and exclusive non-gaming products moving forward.
