When one talks about some of the greatest video games of the past decade, then it goes without saying that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild would definitely be a major part of this conversation. Regardless of the recent lull that Nintendo has fallen into when it comes to its major releases, there’s no denying the fact that their major releases on the Switch have been truly incredible, and Breath of the Wild is a perfect representation of this.
Breath of the Wild is pretty much an evolution of the open-world concept, showing major AAA developers — who’ve been phoning in their games for the longest time — how an open-world game should be made. The reactive nature and relatively high difficulty of Breath of the Wild is a refreshing break from the norm and serves as an experience that is therapeutic, enjoyable, and challenging at the same time. So, it’s only a given that new players would want to try out one of the most innovative games ever made. But keep in mind that there are several mistakes that one can make in their first playthrough. Here are the most common mistakes that people make in Breath of the Wild.
10 Trying To Scale Down The Great Plateau
The first thing that most people would try to do is ignore everything the game is telling at the start and try to scale down the Great Plateau using the minor pool of stamina that they have.
It doesn’t take a Breath of the Wild expert to state why this is a bad idea and serves as nothing more than a swift way to get a Game Over in record time.
9 Not Making Any Food Or Elixirs
After the tutorial, most people would just rely on eating uncooked ingredients to get their health back instead of using food to gain more health or elixirs to get a boost in battle.
While this might be a serviceable strategy in the early goings, later stages of the game would pretty much force people into cooking up proper food and elixirs to avoid getting stuck in a sticky situation.
8 Avoiding Most Challenging Combat Encounters
Breath of the Wild is not an easy game by any means, so it would still be understandable if most people choose to avoid any encounter that poses even a modicum of challenge.
However, this will prove to have grave repercussions down the line when the player is pretty much forced into some challenging encounters. Instead, they’re better off fighting against these enemies to gain some much-needed combat experience and also gain some valuable materials in the process as well.
7 Hoarding Weapons And Shields
While it might be appealing to grab anything and everything that’s obtainable in Breath of the Wild, it’ll only take a few hours to realize that players can’t really do the same with weapons and shields.
So, instead of picking up weak equipment that will inevitably need to be disposed of, players should ideally only pick up weapons and shields that have high durability and stats instead.
6 Wasting Good Equipment On Weak Enemies
Conversely, one shouldn’t use their best equipment to deal with weak enemies that can be dealt with by using some pretty basic weaponry either.
Breath of the Wild forces people to find a balance with their equipment and change their strategies on the fly due to its weapon durability mechanic. So, to break your best sword on some useless Bokoblins would obviously be nothing more than a massive waste of time.
5 Not Collecting Korok Seeds
Perhaps the biggest mistake that players can make in Breath of the Wild is not interacting with the environment enough — after all, doing so would prevent players from getting some extremely valuable Korok Seeds.
These seeds are the only way to increase one’s capacity to carry weapons, bows, and shields, which is a boon in Breath of the Wild for reasons we’ve already discussed before.
4 Ignoring The Berserk Divine Beasts
Perhaps the most glaring and infuriating mistake that most people can make is ignoring some if not all of the Divine Beasts for the sole purpose of completing the game as soon as possible.
Not only will this prevent people from enjoying the massive wealth of content in the game, but it will also reduce the overall enjoyability of one’s experience as well.
3 Ignoring The Shrines
There are numerous shrines present across the world of Hyrule, and it may be tempting to ignore some of these places because of the infuriating puzzles and the visual monotony.
However, it goes without saying that completing these shrines is of the essence to upgrade Link’s character and become a truly unstoppable force further down the line.
2 Making A Very Early Trek To Hyrule Castle
One of the biggest draws of Breath of the Wild is the fact that people can pretty much head to the final boss fight from the very second they unlock the glider.
However, this isn’t recommended in the slightest — instead, people should take their time to explore everything the game has in store for them and upgrade Link’s health and stamina so that he isn’t one-shotted by Calamity Ganon.
1 Underestimating Calamity Ganon
Speaking of which, most people who’ve played Breath of the Wild are of the opinion that Calamity Ganon is a complete pushover, especially after completing the four Divine Beasts.
While this might be somewhat true for people who’ve mastered the combat and upgraded their character to quite an extent, one should still keep in mind that Calamity Ganon can easily decimate players who take his attacks for granted. So, players should be on their A-game and strike a perfect balance between offense and defense in this battle. Now, Darkbeast Ganon is a completely different — and rather disappointing — tale entirely.
