Cobra Kai is set to kick off 2021 when its Netflix exclusive third season becomes available on the platform starting January 8. Netflix just picked up the show this year from YouTube, after the latter declined to renew Cobra Kai for an eventual fourth season and the move has paid off handsomely.
Ever since Cobra Kai was added to Netflix, the series’ first two seasons went on to rack up huge streaming figures for the company, easily placing it among their most-watched shows. With all that in mind, the first look previews shared by Netflix recently are sure to have Cobra Kai and Karate Kid fans excited with the promise of more 80’s nostalgia.
As Cobra Kai’s season 3 trailer hinted, the show is looking to lean in more towards Karate Kid II instead of the first entry in the saga, something they hope to achieve by having Daniel LaRusso travel all the way to Okinawa, where he’ll face some old friends and enemies. Among the former is LaRusso’s love interest from the sequel, Kumiko, who shows up to provide some much-needed comfort to Daniel.
The brief scene shows Daniel reminiscing what it was like to be able to count on Mr. Miyagi’s advice, coming to the realization that he’s now as old as his old sensei was when he met him. Kumiko then says maybe she can arrange a way for Daniel to be able to contact Mr. Miyagi, opening up the possibility for more flashbacks of the same kind Daniel had in the first two seasons and maybe even something more.
Macchio has said in interviews that the Daniel audiences will see in season 3 is very different to the guy he played before, as he started the show being on top of the world and now he’s devastated over the guilt of failing his own protégé, all while struggling to balance his business and family life with his karate dojo rivalry with Johnny Lawrence. As a side note, the actor also mentioned it was a pleasure for him that the story went back to Karate Kid II, this time in the real Okinawa, because the original film had shot all of its Japan scenes in Hawaii.
It’s still not exactly clear how much of Cobra Kai’s third season will play out in Okinawa, given that Daniel is apparently supposed to be in Japan on a business trip, but it’s guaranteed the showrunners are keen on making the best out of having the Karate Kid meet Kumiko and his rival Chozen again.
Cobra Kai is available on Netflix with season 3 scheduled for release on January 8, 2021.
