Illumination has just released a cast list for Sing 2, the sequel to hit movie Sing. For those who haven’t seen it, the film is basically American Idol starring CGI animals and crams in as many different famous songs and artists as possible to make the most of its runtime. It seems Sing 2 will be no different, as Illumination has just released the cast list for the film, which includes the expected bevy of big-name actors and superstar singers.
The original film featured the talents of Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Scarlett Johansson, Taron Egerton, Tori Kelly, and Nick Kroll, all of whom are expected to appear again in the sequel. Rounding out that cast, however, are a few surprise guests. NBCUniversal made the announcement that Chelsea Peretti would also be lending her voice to the film, along with Bobby Cannavale, Letitia Wright, and Eric Andre.
Sing also featured, on top of the nearly 60 established songs in the movie, a completely new piece by Stevie Wonder and Ariana Grande titled “Faith.” A superstar collaboration like that isn’t an easy bar to top, so NBCUniversal is setting its sights high with a brand new collection of iconic artists. The lineup this time around will reportedly feature U2 front-man Bono, as well as Halsey and Pharrell Williams, all of whom have quite the reputation and several hits under their belts.
That said, it hasn’t been easy going for Sing 2. Like every movie in the 2020-2021 release window, the project was delayed by the Coronavirus pandemic. It’s original timeslot of July 2, 2021 was given to Minions: Rise of Gru, and Sing 2 found itself pushed back to December 22nd of the same year. At the very least, that will make it a decent holiday outing at a time when theaters are hopefully able to operate at normal capacity.
According to the synopsis, the film will see the cast of the original film attempting to convince Bono’s character to join them for their biggest performance yet, an extravagant stage debut in the entertainment capital of the world. A solid premise for a family-friendly blockbuster.
With the wealth of talent in the cast and the solid performance of the first film, everything is in place for Sing 2 to provide yet another dose of wholesome family fun when it finally hits theaters next year.
Sing 2 will release on December 22nd, 2021.
