Cyberpunk 2077 Did Wrong By One Character | Game Rant

T-Bug is a character that players will meet early on in their journey through Cyberpunk 2077. She’s a talented netrunner who helps V and Jackie Welles early on in their missions, but unfortunately, her involvement in Cyberpunk 2077‘s story ends too early. This article contains spoilers for Cyberpunk 2077.

Despite all of the bugs and flaws that came with Cyberpunk 2077‘s launch that some have argued was premature, the characters and side missions around them are as interesting as the main questline itself. Each character in Night City is tailored with a unique personality that is typically seen through a number of quests that V completes as a mercenary. For example, Claire is a trans woman with a heart as big as her truck. She’s featured in fun racing missions called The Beast In Me but it’s later revealed that she wants revenge on the man who killed her husband. Not only are the side quests in Cyberpunk interesting, but oftentimes, they turn dark and force V to make difficult decisions.

Unfortunately, T-Bug, despite her interesting personality and talents as a netrunner, doesn’t get the same treatment as all of these other important Cyberpunk characters. As a skilled hacker, T-Bug is first seen during the combat tutorial mission of Cyberpunk 2077 because she was able to obtain a Militech training shard. She’s “tweaked the course material a bit,” and makes jokes mocking the militant style of Militech’s training sergeant.

After introducing Jackie and V to Dexter DeShawn, T-Bug assists the pair throughout the heist, doing much of the technological dirty work from her apartment, until her brain is fried remotely by Arasaka agents and she dies.

It seems as if T-Bug’s main function as a character is solely to show players the ropes of technology and mercenary missions in Cyberpunk by assisting V when they’re new to the job. After the prologue, though V meets several netrunners throughout the main story, none of them help V step by step through missions. T-Bug, on the other hand, not only shows V combat tactics but also walks her through the first braindance session with Judy and the heist with Yorinobu Arasaka as well.

T-Bug helps Jackie and V locate Sandra Dorsett and get the pair of mercenaries in touch with Dexter DeShawn, one of Night City’s most notorious fixers, but is killed off shortly later. This could be something of a “wise sage” trope often used in fiction, where the teacher only helps the hero grow their skills early on and dies near the beginning of the protagonist’s journey.

But there’s a lot of mystery around the netrunner that never gets explored due to her untimely death, such as her relationship with Dex. When V asks her about her relationship with Dex and how long they’ve known each other, T-Bug defensively shoots back with a philosophical quote. There’s also a sweet moment while Jackie and V are on their way to Arasaka where she quotes Aristotle. This interest in philosophy is unique to T-Bug’s character, but an explanation for it is never given.

Later on, because Cyberpunk 2077 glosses over her death scene abruptly, it’s only clear to the player that T-Bug had died once V mentions it a while later.

Over the course of Cyberpunk 2077‘s story, many characters will die, including V’s closest confidant Jackie. Jackie and V are inherently close, no matter which lifepath the player chooses, so V will get to participate in their friend’s funeral if they meet with Mama Welles after the prologue. While funerals in the form of a quest aren’t a regular occurrence in Cyberpunk, most will receive a nod or heartfelt acknowledgment of some kind.

But despite the fact that T-Bug has been working with Jackie and V for some time, V can’t do anything for the netrunner after she’s departed, or barely acknowledges T-Bug’s existence the way V does Jackie’s. Although. there is a Cyberpunk 2077 side quest called The Gift, in which V can pick up an item from a netrunner shop. V can talk to Yoko briefly about T-Bug’s death, but players have pointed out that this quest can be done prior to the heist without the “from beyond the grave” dialogue.

It’s unclear why a strong, prominent character was written only to be killed off and overlooked early on. Some Cyberpunk players theorize that T-Bug’s story was meant to be longer but, similar to Evelyn Parker, was cut short due to some kind of constraint.

Cyberpunk 2077 is available on PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One, and later on PS5 and Xbox Series X.
