The northernmost province of Tamriel is harsh and brutal to varying degrees. Some holds are plagued by bandits and necromancers, while others are within the grasp of unrelenting mother nature. Regardless of where one is within the digital dimension of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, there are always fascinating things to find if the Dragonborn does not fear heading away from the beaten path.
Haafingar, the smallest hold in Skyrim, is located to the far northwest. Although its western border connects with High Rock, this section of the map is far more influenced by the haunting Sea of Ghosts to the north as well as the wild and mostly untamed holds of Hjaalmarch and The Reach. Here, the player can find some deadly, but desirable, spots; often holding uncommon or rare loot. Though one will not find some of these on the map, for some treasures are hidden better than others.
10 Clam Digger’s Camp
If one heads west of Northwatch Keep, they will likely come across a small camp with a bountiful harvest ripe for the taking. This farm of bivalves has the largest number of clams in the entire game. Over 30 can be selected and shucked at the player’s leisure.
Near the tent and cooking fire, the Dragonborn can find even more ingredients that can allow them to cook up quite a stockpile of healing foods. Furthermore, if the player needs to chill out and enjoy the scenery, this spot has a nice view of Castle Volkihar.
9 Couldn’t Be Bothered Cave
Skyrim is a huge game, even bigger than any other main series title in The Elder Scrolls franchise. Despite its expansiveness, not everything made it into the world players got on release. There are a couple of areas here and there that hint at content that was supposed to be there but was cut from the game for one reason or another.
The player can discover one such occurrence by following the western road out of Pinefrost Tower until they hit a dead end. This end, however, seems a bit odd as the Dragonborn can clearly hear the wind coming out from a very conspicuous boulder placed directly in front of the same kind of cave entrance that can be found all over the province.
8 Fool’s Gold Island
To the west of Broken Oar Grotto, players will happen upon a seemingly uninteresting island. But on closer inspection, the more eagle-eyed gamers will spot a wavering flag atop an outcropping of rocks. When approached, a skeleton can be seen clinging to this draped pole in an eternal embrace.
How or why this person perished is unknown, but what is known is that there are a few veins of gold ore around the rocky hill where the flag and its loyal skeleton are located. When mining, be wary of one’s ankles, for there are quite a few mudcrabs covering this minute island.
7 Nordic Burial Ruins
From the Thalmor Embassy, if the Dragonborn goes east, they may stumble into a subtle stairway leading up to a blocked barrow of some kind. Appraising one’s ascent is a carved nordic faced engraved onto an ornamental stone structure. These usually mean an area has loot; this unmarked location’s goods can be found a bit higher on the stairs.
Three burial urns and a weapon can be picked up, though from this position one may question the significance of the closed-off tomb. The official guide for the game mentions that it belonged to a long-dead Nord hero and that the area was slowly being reclaimed by nature.
6 Sabre Cat Lair
Those in need of fur pelts (and decidedly unafraid of sabre cats) should consider seeking out this next spot. When traveling northeast from the Thalmor Embassy, keep an eye out for a rocky overhang. Below this stone shelf, there is a clearing where two sabre cats live.
Also in this small clearing, there is the dead body of an Argonian, upon which the player can find a book titled “Guide to Better Thieving” which raises one’s Pickpocketing skill. Also, above this unmarked location is another one that is worth noting.
5 Human Pincushion
From the sabre cat lair, head to the top of the rocky shelf overhang and proceed up until one finds a brutal scene. This is when the Dragonborn will encounter the skeleton of one who was executed in a severe manner. Five weapons are pinning this fleshless body to the bloody, frozen earth.
These weapons can be looted, as can a staff resting on a nearby tree. There is also a satchel to be pilfered for some goods and a book titled “The Rear Guard” that raises one’s Light Armor skill. Ironically, this useful tome is located directly next to the skeleton.
4 Howling Wolf’s Folly
Despite the name of this area, there are no wolves to be found. However, there is much howling, though that of a frost troll instead of any canines. This pale-furred fiend has set up its lair amidst the ruins of this collapsed tower and is fiercely territorial.
Southeast of Steepfall Burrow, the Dragonborn can find this troll’s unorthodox home and the dead bodies of its most recent victims. After dealing with the hostile foe, one can search the body of a deceased Stormcloak soldier and uncover a book titled “Proper Lock Design” that increases one’s Lockpicking skill when read.
3 Pinemoon Bear Lair
The wilderness runs rampant in this area as people are slain by the tundra’s fiercest predators. Bears, near the top of the food chain, make their dens wherever they please. Most often this happens in caves, but on occasion, a particularly liberal grizzly will make its home beneath a simple stone shelf.
Southeast of Pinemoon Cave, players can find a bear about to dine on a recent kill. The dead body of a bandit will be lying beneath the stone overhang, freshly slaughtered by the bear. An interesting spot, though sadly there isn’t any notable loot to be found here.
2 Reeking Cave
Even though this cavern is not marked on the map, it is a crucial area for the main quest “Diplomatic Immunity” where the Dragonborn must infiltrate the Thalmor Embassy. Near the end of if, the player will have to make their escape via this stinking gouge in the ground.
Be sure not to rush through the area, however, as there is a Stone of Barenziah, an Illusion-increasing book, as well as the body of a mage to loot. One should also make sure not to overlook the frost troll living here that gives this foul fissure its name.
1 Forsworn Ambush Camp
Be careful when exploring the area northwest of Deepwood Redoubt, as there is a gully here filled with bear traps. An unfortunate traveler was not so observant and fell victim to this ambush. At first, it may seem like a hunting accident, but when the player approaches the culprits behind this death reveal themselves.
Two Forsworn warriors will launch themselves at the Dragonborn in an attempt to make their not-so-subtle ambush successful. When they are dealt with, check uphill behind some nearby pine trees to find a tent with a coin purse and a chest to loot.
