The variance between the nine holds in The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim is great and makes for diverse gameplay. Traveling between them can feel like exploring much more than a single province. Grassy plains, boreal valleys, and harsh tundra are the kinds of terrain one can encounter in this huge game.
One of the most unforgiving of these holds is The Pale; aptly named for the near-constant blanket of snow and ice that covers much of its landmass. This is a place where cold weather is felt and some cold deeds are done. Some of these can be experienced by the Dragonborn, though many will require a bit of exploration to find as a few of the most interesting ones don’t appear on the map.
10 A Bloody Trail
Grisly and enigmatic remains are startlingly common in the wilds of Skyrim, particularly the less forgiving northern parts. North of the Nordic tomb Volunruud, upon a snowy hill, one might come across a series of bloody prints vibrantly contrasting with the ivory dunes.
Following them will lead the Dragonborn to the bodies of two dead wood elves. There is no sign of their murderer, though when looting one of the corpses the player will discover a treasure map.
9 Beached Boat With Treasure
If the player is adventuring along the northern coast, be sure to keep an eye out for goods that have washed ashore. The Sea of Ghosts between Tamriel and Atmora is fierce and wild, which results in many things being either claimed by the sea or randomly shoved back onto the land.
Go east along the shore from the Wreck of the Brinehammer and the Dragonborn will likely spot an overturned boat surrounded by its former cargo. Among these containers, one can find a Scimitar, a book that raises Alteration, as well as quite a few ingredients and materials.
8 Lovers’ Getaway
Not all unmarked locations are full of doom and death, however. East of the Dawnstar Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary, there is a conspicuous tent next to a burnt-out campfire. When entered, it becomes apparent that the tent belonged to a couple seeking solitude for their romance.
Next to the bedrolls, there are empty wine bottles and an amulet of Mara, which is an item that one can give to someone else to propose marriage. There are even red mountain flowers scattered about the ground for a romantic aesthetic.
7 Graveyard Of Giants
West of Loreius Farm, the Dragonborn can encounter a wide stretch of land filled with the skeletal remains of mammoths. Such places are rare despite these wooly titans being relatively common.
Among the big bones, there are two poachers standing next to a freshly slain mammoth who will become aggressive if the player ignores their warnings to leave. Also worth noting that this is an area where one can fight the ghost of a mammoth during the quest “Kyne’s Sacred Trials.”
6 Sunken Treasure
Players who have found and looted the Wreck of the Brinehammer likely think they’ve found all that there is to this locale. But they would be wrong, as the best treasure can be found a bit to the north of the beached ship. A chest and a few crates will be seen underwater past two small spits of land.
Besides gold and a few common items to be scavenged, there is a book in the chest titled “Sithis” that can increase the Dragonborn’s Alteration skill if read.
5 Camp Near The Exit From Mzark
This spot is unlikely to be found unless one does the quest “Elder Knowledge,” for the journey this mission takes the Dragonborn on leads them through a dwarven ruin called Mzark. An exit elevator from the dungeon will lead the player to a snowy mountain adorned by a simple camp.
Take a look inside the tent to find loot like an Illusion-raising skill book, two chests, and some food. There are even bits of dwarven metal that can be melted down into ingots for smithing.
4 Camp By A Waterfall
To the west of Anga’s Mill is a campsite by a waterfall. Although the camp itself holds nothing too remarkable, the nearby falling waters house some treasure. It looks like someone else knew about it, though fell to mysterious circumstances as their skeleton now floats below the waterfall.
Another way this spot can be found is by doing Dark Brotherhood contracts. When one picks up the quest to kill Ennodius Papius, a marker for him will appear at this campsite.
3 A Lone Peak
North of Forsaken Cave, past a dwarven elevator, there is a peak that is a bit different from most others. This relatively small mountain is capped with a weathered flag and some loot. There is a satchel full of ingredients, a helmet, and a weapon to be acquired.
However, despite these goods being useful, the trek up here doesn’t seem to justify it. When the Dragonborn then looks up and gauges their surroundings, they will discover the true treasure of this wayward peak: the view.
2 Spider Ambush
Humans are not the only ones that can set a trap, and the player will be reminded of this if they stumble across this chest next to a skeleton and some dwarven masonry. Northeast of Tumble Arch Pass, this scene can be found, though it is recommended to approach while keeping an eye on the treetops.
When the Dragonborn gets close enough, spiders will descend from the coniferous foliage and attack. Despite ambushes and spiders being well-known elements in The Elder Scrolls games, this happening feels a bit more like something out of Minecraft.
1 A Frost Troll Den
Frost trolls are understandably, yet regrettably, common in The Pale. These furry fiends love the ice and snow and make their homes wherever they please. One such den can be found just west of Dawnstar, though be wary as frost trolls do not like uninvited guests.
Accompanied by some bones and blood is a chest in the back. Within, the player can find a skill book titled “Death Blow of Abemanit” which will raise their Block skill when read.
