The new year promises to bring plenty of new entertainment to viewers’ homes. That includes the very first Disney+ Marvel series, WandaVision, which will be hitting the streaming service in January. While fans have already been treated to plenty of promotional material, a new teaser released on Christmas day demonstrates how the show will feel like a science-fiction take on traditional sitcom tropes.
It begins with Wanda and Vision realizing that they have no memories of being married: they have no song, they have no anniversary, and they have no wedding rings. However, that third point is quickly fixed up, and the two heroes appear to move on from their confusion. It’s a small moment that demonstrates how the couple appears to be in some form of altered reality, but for the most part, they appear to just be rolling with it.
The trailer then moves on to showing Vision and Wanda throughout the years, attempting to “fit in” in their new home of Westview. That includes having twin babies, which appears to be something that caught the pair completely off-guard. “Life moves pretty fast in the suburbs,” Wanda remarks at one point, perhaps hinting at some sort of time-altering element. The wrongness of the situation starts to bleed through when they are visited by a neighbor (played by Katherine Hahn), who appears to break the fourth wall.
Things only get more mysterious from that point on, including a quick shot of reality rebuilding itself, and a brief encounter with Monica Rambeau (played by Teyonah Parris), who doesn’t appear to have any memory of her identity. From there, Vision remarks that he thinks something is wrong, which appears to be somewhat of an understatement. The trailer concludes with some quick shots of further reality-altering by the Scarlet witch herself, before Wanda finally admits, “we just don’t know what to expect.” That goes for the audience, as well.
WandaVision is just the first part of the upcoming Disney+ MCU streaming lineup, something that Kevin Feige may be the future of the franchise. It will eventually be joined by other series like Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Hawkeye, and She-Hulk, which as a legal comedy will be one of the biggest stylistic departures in the MCU yet.
WandaVision premieres on Disney+ on January 15, 2021.
