Apex Legends Fan Redesigns the Game’s Classification System, and It’s Great

Since launch, Apex Legends has maintained the classic Assault, Defense, Recon, and Support system common in many similar shooters. However, many feel as if the game has outgrown the class system through its variety of buffs or nerfs. As such, one Redditor by the name of sizzle_burn has come up with a redesign of the system that would go a long way.

Namely, the biggest change he makes is the addition of a “runner” classification. Mobility has always been the name of the game, and as a result, a lot of Apex Legends characters are focused on getting somewhere, somehow, differently from other legends. This new classification includes characters like Wraith, Pathfinder, Octane, and Horizon, all of which make sense. Although she’s the newest character, Horizon feels a similar niche in the game, one that others do but not one that necessarily makes a great “assault” character.

Furthermore, as sizzle_burn discusses, he moves Pathfinder here from the recon classification. This reclassification would allow Pathfinder to get his own passive, since his ability has become commonplace to all recon characters. It’s smart and helps level out some of the other classification; perhaps the next biggest change is, due to the Mover classification, the oversaturation of Assault classes is reduced to two legends, the smallest category here. Bangalore and Revenant make the most sense, while other Assault classes are dispersed elsewhere.

For example, Mirage joins the recon class alongside Bangalore and Crypto. The idea, at least one boosted in the comments, is how Mirage’s clones could be used to track and pinpoint enemies in a more effective way. Of course, this already happens when someone is shooting at a class now that they have HP, but a ping on the map whenever this happens would go a long way. It’s an interesting and good position for Mirage to be in with future changes in Apex Legends.

Gibraltar, Loba, and Lifeline, in this system, make up the support class. Gibraltar is the by-definition tank, and while this seems odd, it’s also because Gibraltar can do a little bit of everything. With him providing his shield and quicker heals, it makes sense to put him alongside lifeline, who is the best, targeted Healer, while Loba provides everyone with a better equipment.

The defensive tank symbol for Apex Legends is changed to Pioneer and is made up of the characters who can truly lock down and fortify an area, including Caustic, Wattson, and Rampart. Pioneer doesn’t make the most sense in this change, and it would probably be better to stick with something like Trapper. Each of these legends would excel at this, and it keeps the core tenants of the class intact.

Ultimately, with the varying tier lists from season to season and wide array of changes to made to Apex Legends‘ meta, this type of change doesn’t seem drastic—it seems logical. The focus on Apex Legends characters has always made the game great, and refocusing the game to emphasize all the changes would only help understand each character’s capabilities in the game.

Apex Legends is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, with a Switch version in development.
