An Indiana university esports team has come up with a clever logo to combine school pride and gaming tradition. A Reddit user attending the school shared a picture of the logo yesterday, which belongs to the Indianapolis based private university, Butler University.
Butler University has been recognized as an outstanding private university for both academics and athletics for many years now. With esports continuing to rise in popularity, schools at almost every level of education are creating spaces for gamers to show off their skills. Butler’s esports team has been active since 2017, but it seems their logo is now drawing more attention for its creativity and professionalism.
One glance at the Butler esports team’s logo is all it takes to appreciate the design, but there’s more detail to be found in a closer look. The logo is an incredible example of an ambiguous image, and the combined forward and backward facing gamepads successfully imitate the team’s bulldog mascot with surprising clarity. The gamepads themselves manage to evoke the spirit of gamepad play regardless of brand with a design that mimics controllers of both Xbox and PlayStation varieties.
The nose and eyebrows of the bulldog are nice touches, along with the slightly chewed “B” tag to highlight the university name. The collar spikes can even be visualized as a laurel wreath, placing the central gamepad on a pedestal of importance. With this well-designed logo there’s no doubt the Butler esports team will be representing their university in esports tournaments with style and class.
But a good esports logo can be indicative of other things besides school spirit. In the professional scene, logos sometimes represent sponsor or company affiliation. Professional esports team Complexity Gaming recently went through a logo design change in 2019 a few years after they were acquired by Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. The new logo drops Complexity’s historic red and grey crescents and transitions to a blue star that mimics the color of the Cowboys. The esports team Echo Fox also paid tribute to its founder, Rick Fox, before the team was disbanded in 2019 following multiple lawsuits.
Though Butler University is better known for its basketball and cross country championships, the university esports team will have plenty of time to prove its mettle. Despite many event cancellations right now due to the coronavirus, esports remains a growing sport with more teams and players looking to join in on the action. For now, Butler University can be confident in the knowledge that they have a logo that represents both their school and the spirit of gaming remarkably well.
