The Toughest Decisions Players Have To Make In The Witcher 3 (& What Happens When You Make Them)

RPGs need to have elements that make the role one is playing important. The gravity of a situation lends itself to this notion. Forcing crucial events to be pivotally affected by the player’s judgment and skills can make gameplay come alive.

Tough decisions of great significance are an integral feature of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Choosing who, or what, lives and dies by the blade, flame, or rage of the masses gives each playthrough a different twist. One can even affect the destiny of whole nations while walking in the boots of Geralt of Rivia. The consequences of a few decisions are merely hinted at in the epilogue, though many alter the game’s story in many different ways.

10 A Greedy God

South of Wastrel Manor, one can find a decrepit shrine where local peasants complain that their local god demands too many offerings. They are distraught about not being able to meet the demand, despite this deity not really doing much for them besides claiming to be the cause of fortunate things in their lives.

When Geralt investigates, he learns that this god is actually a sylvan. This humanoid monster had tricked the villagers and was growing fat on their offerings. Geralt can slay the gluttonous creature, reason with it to not demand as much, or simply shrug and walk away. The best experience and loot can be acquired by fighting and killing the obese beast, however, this foe is a tricky one and should be challenged with caution.

9 Distractions

Getting into physical confrontations and chatting up people wherever one goes comprises a large chunk of the gameplay in The Witcher 3, and can even affect parts of the main questline. With so much to see and do, it can be very tough to pull oneself away from the rampant distractions along the road.

While approaching Crow’s Perch, Geralt might have had a chance to stop at an in by the crossroads. If he had caused a fight within the establishment, his actions will come at a cost. The guards at the entrance of the small settlement will bar his way because of his ill reputation, forcing the witcher to find another way to speak with The Bloody Baron.

8 The Bloody Baron’s Baby

While searching for clues about the whereabouts of the Baron’s wife and daughter, Geralt learns that the Baron’s wife once had a miscarriage and lost the baby. The circumstances of how this happened are hazy, though it is heavily hinted that the man was somehow responsible.

The baby was discarded, unburied. But returned as a fiendish spirit known as a botchling. Geralt must deal with the foul thing and find a lead on the Baron’s family. He can choose from two ways of doing this: turn the botchling into a Lubberkin, a household guardian spirit, or slay it and use its blood for a ritual. Which path is chosen will affect one’s standing with the Baron and result in slightly different rewards.

7 Dealing With A Thief

North of White Orchard, Geralt can come across a man by the side of the road claiming to be a merchant. He, in a distraught manner, tells the witcher of how his horse and cart were spooked by monsters then veered off the road and were lost in the swamp nearby. He asks Geralt to retrieve the goods for him, fearing to do so himself because of the beasts that lurk by the bog.

When the witcher returns with the box of alchemic ingredients, he can see signs of foul play, in that there are indications that the horse and cart were forced off the road by human hands, with all evidence pointing to the so-called merchant as the culprit. Geralt can call the man out, revealing him to be a Temerian guerilla actually raiding Nilfargian supplies. Geralt can give the thief the goods and let him go, turn him in to the authorities, or take the goods for himself. The latter of which nets one more money and the contents of the box.

6 Fate Of An Arsonist

In the village of White Orchard, the White Wolf can come across a recently burned down forge. The owner, Willis, implores the witcher to find out who committed the crime. Eventually, after a little digging, Geralt finds out that a dwarf named Napp is responsible.

The dwarf offers Geralt a bribe in return for letting him go. If the witcher accepts the bribe, Napp will go free and Geralt’s pockets will be a bit heavier. However, if Napp is turned in to the authorities, they drag him off to be executed immediately in swift and harsh justice.

5 Brutal Reason

Geralt sometimes gets himself into high-stakes situations where he is in a position to slay monarchs. Or at least guarantee their demise in some capacity. After assassinating King Radovid of Redania, the witcher and his allies are betrayed by Dijkstra, at which point the player will be prompted with severe choices.

Either defend your allies and attack Dijkstra or simply walk away. After all, there are many other quests, including those pertaining to the Wild Hunt, that only the White Wolf can see done. Though leaving Roche, Thaler, and Ves here will result in their deaths, preventing any further interaction with them in the playthrough.

4 Cold As A Stone

Towards the end of one’s adventures in the Hearts of Stone DLC, the course of the quest leaves the fate of Olgierd von Everec in the hands of Geralt. The witcher can choose to challenge Gaunter O’Dimm on behalf of the soldier or to simply leave the man to his fate of perishing at the will of this primal manifestation of darkness.

Choosing to turn one’s back on one’s friends not only results in more negative outcomes but a loss of loot and fun gameplay as well. Refusing to match wits with O’Dimm would be missing out on a great challenge and subsequent satisfying triumph if one has the intellect and wisdom to overcome the conundrum.

3 Savage Skellige

While on Skellige, Geralt will attend a feast among the nobles of all the Skelligan islands. Though things are not pleasant and cheerful, as many begin to transform into bears and go wild, causing many deaths. This was no random act of sorcery, but the one responsible can only be found if one takes a certain path of the story.

The succession of Skellige’s throne is a matter in which the witcher becomes deeply involved. He can support either Hjalmar or Cerys. The way the game takes the player while supporting Cerys leads to the discovery of who caused the slaughter with the bears. Birna Bran had arranged for the drinks to be spiked to make the warriors change shape and go mad. For her crimes, she gets chained to a rock by the sea and left to the elements.

2 Red Or Black

Even though many play The Witcher 3 for the fantasy combat and crazy quests, there is no denying that the romantic aspects hold entertainment value as well. Particularly the dominant love triangle among Geralt, Triss, and Yennefer.

There is no up or downside for choosing either as the White Wolf’s lover. Although, the story changes in some regards, and the epilogue will significantly alter.

1 Death In Both Options

Sometimes there is no good choice. Like being trapped between the devil and the deep blue sea, there are things in the Northern Realms that are too old and different from humans to be comprehended. Their motives are inconceivable, even to witchers. The dark spirit within the Whispering Hillock is such a force, more spirit than a creature, yet able to manifest in a variety of physical forms.

In order to save the children held captive by the Crones, who plan to eat them alive, Geralt seeks the help of a malevolent spirit, which at first does not seem quite so sinister. Soon after the children are safe, however, the now free force from beyond permeates a village and causes the death of all who reside there, and likely many children as well.
