The Outer Worlds – Where To Find The Holographic Shroud (& How To Use It)

It’s impossible to deny just how good a game The Outer Worlds has become. It’s gotten multiple pieces of DLC and continues to dominate sales charts. Gamers have said that the game could replace the Fallout franchise as Obsidian Entertainment has made a game just as strong as (or maybe better than) Fallout: New Vegas.

Players can use cheats to blast all of the restricted areas in the game, but that’s no way to grow or improve. Who wants to take a shortcut, gain nothing, and experience a hollow victory? The Holographic Shroud makes getting the curious items and special questlines that can be found in restricted areas much easier.

Created by Phineas Wells, the Holographic Shroud is almost like a perk as it gives players a special ability of sorts. With the correct ID Cartridge, players and their companions will have their entire appearance changed, including clothes, fingerprints, and voice, allowing them to sneak into restricted areas. The device even supposedly sweetens the breath of those that use it but that’s in-game only, sorry people in the real world!

This ability to sneak around safely is practically vital in difficulties like Supernova as it allows players to avoid being attacked en masse by enemies. Side Quests like Slaughterhouse Clive also become much easier regardless for players with the proper ID Cartridges.

This great gadget does have a limited timer so players will need to try and rush through restricted areas if they don’t wish to get caught. The purple gauge drains when players move and will drain faster if they jump around. It does automatically activate upon entering restricted areas as long as players have the right ID Cartridges which is quite convenient.

While players are disguised, they are not invisible. Enemies can still walk up to the player and ask them questions that require dialogue skills to answer to not get caught. Players that succeed will refill their gauge, but that fail or get seen aren’t out of hope. If they manage to pass another harder round of checks they won’t need to run and gun their way out of the area.

Players can pick up the Holographic Shroud after completing the main quest Comes Now the Power. Once players decide whether to redirect power to either Edgewater or the Botanical Camp, they can fly away on the (possibly poorly named) Unreliable.

Players will then be able to find it on the desk in the Captain’s Quarters on the Unreliable. This is located on the second floor right before the crew bunks for those that get lost easily. Players just need to collect the various ID Cartridges to put their new gadget to use.

The Mardet ID Cartridge is remarkably easy to find and almost serves as a tutorial for how the Holographic Shroud works. It is especially useful for the quest Worst Contract. It can be found in several locations with these being some of the easiest:

  • On the bar in The Lost Hope.
  • On a crate near the main entrance to Groundbreaker security.
  • On a cart next to the Restricted Access door in the Medical Bay.

While the Boarst Factory ID Cartridge is easily obtainable during the Slaughterhouse Clive quest, there are other ways it can be gotten. Players can pickpocket or loot a Corporate Commander inside the C&P Boarst Factory if they are sneaky (or have the bullets to spare).

The ID Cartridge can also be found on a small bookshelf, in a locker, or on a bed in the employee bunk houses outside the factory as well. This is a far easier option for those that forgo the quest to get the cartridge.

The SubLight ID Cartridge is unsurprisingly used to get into the SubLight restricted areas. It can be found in seven separate locations in the Monarch Wilderness. These are the easiest of these locations to obtain it from:

  • In Stellar Bay: On a large shipping container next to a bin on the docks.
  • In Fallbrook: On The ground near the bar on the second floor of Malin’s House of Hospitality.
  • In Amber Heights: In the northernmost building on the patio behind a locked door on the second floor.

The Ice Palace quest becomes far easier with this cartridge at players’ disposal. Thankfully, it is available in several locations, with these being the easiest to find:

  • On the HRS 1084: On a chair in the kitchen.
  • On the Hope: In a room on the second floor.
  • In Byzantium: Looted off the corpse of Corporate Soldiers in the Ministry of Accuracy and Morale.

The Labyrinth Security Personnel ID Cartridge can only be found after landing on Tartarus. Players will need to pass a level 70 check for either Persuade, Lie, or Intimidate to get this cartridge from a Corporate Trooper. Players will want to make sure they do this as it greatly aids in the quest Brave New World.
