A new “Stories from The Outlands” video was released today for Apex Legends and it revealed the origin story of everyone’s favorite smiling robot, Pathfinder. The announcement of this video was leaked last week via an accidental early upload to the Apex official website.
This Apex Legends video is meant to be a preamble to Pathfinder’s upcoming town takeover and collection event expected to begin in 2021, which also leaked. The yellow trench coat skin with a unique select animation that can be seen in the collection event trailer is what Pathfinder dons as a disguise in this video.
The video begins with a grizzled detective named Victor Maldera on the hunt for suspected murderer Alexander Nox, an identity Caustic has been trying to hide from while participating in the Apex games. The detective happens to be working at a restaurant where Pathfinder is attacked by some mysterious criminals who want Pathfinder for reasons unknown. The detective scans Pathfinder’s databanks to reveal that Pathfinder was a witness to multiple crimes, including Revenant murdering Loba’s parents and Caustic’s attack on Humbert Labs.
Another of the videos in Pathfinder’s databanks is a recording of his creator, Dr. Amelie P, who tells him his purpose is to prove that “the Outlands can survive,” hence the name Pathfinder. The letter P initial along with the French accent combined with a snippet of Pathfinder holding a baby are leading some to wonder if Pathfinder’s creator is also mother or grandmother to Natalie Paquette, otherwise known as fellow legend Wattson.
The detective and Pathfinder are then chased around the city by the criminals who want Pathfinder, which may be because Pathfinder has footage of their leader committing murder, as Twitter user @frozenfroh points out. The criminals offer Detective Maldera help finding Nox in exchange for Pathfinder, but double cross and shoot him. Pathfinder saves the two, but not before getting shot himself, corrupting his databank and ruining Maldera’s chance at finding Nox. Maldera leaves Pathfinder thinking him offline for good, but some water trips Pathfinder’s circuits and brings him back online.
The video also includes several other Easter eggs, including that Detective Maldera knew Forge, the legend that never made it to Apex Legends on account of being murdered by Revenant. The video also explains the origins for Pathfinder’s boxing glove heirloom weapons, as he seemed to pick up on Maldera’s boxing ability rather quickly. The video also showcases Pathfinder’s discovery of his love for grappling hooks.
Apex Legends is free-to-play for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, and a Switch version is in development.
