Nintendo lovers are all about the Super Smash Bros. series. The famous Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the latest release in the series, invites players back to fight with new characters and levels while still staying true to the game. This fighting game is a crossover that allows players to brawl with their favorite Nintendo characters.
They can unlock new characters and use new powers while either playing alone or with friends. It’s a blast overall. There are a lot of characters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. However, there are some that clearly outshine others. Let’s take a look at some of the best and worst characters players can fight with. No judgment though; everyone has their favorites.
Updated December 4th, 2020 by Linnea Capps: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has seen many changes since the game’s initial release. Recently, Steve from Minecraft joined the fray and with Patch 9.0.2 some of the more innocuous errors he presented alongside other glitches were removed from the game. Did Steve make the metagame shift in a major way? What characters have fallen from grace? The answers to all this and more are a simple scroll away.
10 Best: Joker
Joker has been in the game for a while now and it is obvious to anyone that picks him up just how strong he can be. Joker players regularly top tournament placements and it’s not just because they are skilled. Joker feels amazing to play with his excellent mobility and if players have taken too many hits they can make a big comeback with the Rebellion Gauge filled. This Persona 5 star made a big impact on the game and is wonderful to play as.
9 Worst: Ganondorf
Ganondorf is a great villain. Nobody can prove otherwise. Despite this, he is not the best character to use in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. He appears as his Ocarina Of Time version, and he’s arguably one of the weakest out of all of them.
Ganondorf usually attacks with his sword but he does not have a large variety of moves which makes him vulnerable. His sword is also not that effective against many more powerful opponents.
8 Best: Pikachu
The adorable but insanely powerful electric mouse never fails to disappoint. Pikachu is one of the best characters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Pikachu possesses great speed and does not lag after jumping and landing which is huge. His speed provides a lot of potential for combos as well.
He also causes major damage to many opponents almost to the point where it’s unfair at times. Pikachu has a large variety of moves in general which also gives him a ton of advantages. Players fighting against Pikachu better gear up.
7 Worst: Little Mac
Mike Tyson might want to make a new Punchout!! game but it’s no secret that Little Mac is not exactly a fan favorite. He may be one of the greatest boxers in all of gaming but he’s not exactly great against other Super Smash Bros. Ultimate characters.
Little Mac is able to hold his own on the ground because that’s pretty much all he can do. Regardless, other characters simply have more moves and cause much more damage. Little Mac is fun to play with on a chill day of Super Smash Bros Ultimate. However, if players really want to get down and dirty they should not fight with him, ever.
6 Best: R.O.B.
R.O.B. isn’t just a collector’s item for Nintendo fans, he’s also one of the best characters o play in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Being a heavier character makes him a more forgiving character for players since it’s harder to knock him off the stage. With all the jet fuel-powered shenanigans to help him recover, players won’t be losing stocks too easily.
R.O.B. also has combos for players willing to learn them. Between the Robo Beam and spinning top, however, they may never need to use them. The opponent might be so zoned out they throw themselves off the stage to get away from the shower of projectiles.
5 Worst: Incineroar
What happens when one of the characters fans were most excited for turns out to be pretty disappointing on the battlefield? Other than disappointment, players may have had to play as Incineroar. The wrestling Pokemon may pack a hype Alonal Whip with some other powerful throws but what player can land them with that atrocious run speed? His massive sides will leave players getting juggled for days before his abysmal recovery lands them in the blast zone.
4 Best: Palutena
Palutena is one of the easiest characters for players to pick up in the game due to her simple combo game. Neutral Air into Neutral Air into Neutral Air is a real combo that works well at low percents! She has two projectiles to keep opponents away and her staff makes it harder for opponents to get in close. We may not be seeing another Kid Icarus title any time soon but players can expect to see a lot of Palutena players if they go to play online.
3 Worst: Dr. Mario
Dr. Mario may have made his return to the gaming world but his appearance in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate leaves a lot to be desired. Mario is a fan-favorite no matter what. Once a favorite and even tournament viable character in Super Smash Bros. Melee, Dr. Mario has fallen down to the point of being unviable in competitive play.
Players will be frustrated with his poor recovery, finding themselves falling into the blast zones more often than making it back to the stage. Like doing combos? Dr. Mario will more likely be the victim in the next epic combo video than performing any himself. All of this complied with his slow speeds make him a frustrating character to use.
2 Best: Wario
How is Wario, one of the fattest characters in the game, so darn fast? Wario’s heaviness is quite the advantage combined with his phenomenal recovery, making him difficult to take stocks from. Plus crafty Wario players can heal themselves by eating projectiles and items on the stage.
Oh, and did we mention Wario’s Waft? The move where players can defeat opponents by literally farting on them? Call us childish but this makes Wario one of the most fun characters in the entire game.
1 Worst: Ice Climbers
Oddly enough, there was a downgrade for the Ice Climbers between Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Ultimate. Unfortunately, this means that they are not great characters to fight with anymore. In Super Smash Bros Ultimate, they cannot work together as effectively.
For example, if one of them is attacking an opponent, the other one cannot do anything anymore. There might as well just be one of them to fight with at this point. The Ice Climbers also provide barely any damage in comparison to other characters.
