This Gamer Ramen Is Made Out of Doritos and Mountain Dew

For many years now, Doritos and Mountain Dew have gone together like salt and pepper or peanut butter and jelly. The food duo, which has now been combined as a Doritos flavor, is also highly evocative of gaming culture due to its close ties with the Call of Duty and Halo franchises. So, someone decided to make Gamer Ramen out of these iconic ingredients.

Twitter user @huynasaur came through with Gamer Ramen made out of Doritos and Mountain Dew. While he has made other special ramen flavors including a Thanksgiving one with turkey broth and cranberry oil, or a Halloween-themed dish with squid ink noodles and pumpkin broth, this concoction certainly takes the cake for the most unusual combination so far.

All of the various components that make up a standard bowl of ramen had Doritos and Mountain Dew integrated into them, with Huy making it all from scratch. The noodles were made Doritos-flavored through cheese powder, cumin, and onion powder, while the broth was a mixture of Mountain Dew Baja Blast, kombu kelp, chicken, apples, ginger, and onion. The dashi, which forms the base of the broth, was dubbed by Huy as “mountain dewshi.”

The green eggs were soaked in a mixture of Mountain Dew and sake along with the braised pork and the daikon radish. Huy reported that his creation was “actually a pretty good bowl of ramen” which tasted of “slightly sweet/savory tropical ocean water.” He made packed kits for his friends and family, with one of them stating that the ramen “surpassed my expectations and is pretty tasty!” Despite these glowing endorsements, commenters expressed a mixture of disgust and astonishment at Huy’s inventiveness. It will be certainly interesting to see what he comes up with next.

While Huy is just a single Twitter user, he appears to reflect a growing societal sentiment in being adventurous with food combinations. McDonald’s in China recently released a Spam and Oreos burger in perhaps an even more bizarre combination than Huy’s Gamer Ramen. Reviews for this strange offering have been mixed so far.

As for ramen in a general sense, the Japanese noodle soup has become a dish ubiquitous for those living fast lifestyles due to how common its instant variant is and its ease of preparation. One company, Vite Ramen, has taken up the task of creating nutritious instant ramen targeted towards gamers following a successful Kickstarter campaign which raised nearly $250,000. While a little pricier than other options at around $5 per packet, the company highlights its ethical work environment with fair wages and a healthy work-life balance.
