PS5 Ships More Units in One Month Than Any Other PlayStation Console

The PS5 console has had an incredibly successful initial run, with new reports showing record high numbers of sales for the first system’s first month of sales. While a considerable number of these consoles have unfortunately gone to scalpers making millions on Next-Gen tech, the fervor for fans to quickly pick up Sony’s newest system has still led to an incredible number of shipped units.

According to a new report by DigiTimes, the impressive number of PS5 sales over the course of the first four weeks that the system has been available is only the start of the upcoming rollout. Sony reportedly plans to increase the shipments in 2021 as the supply stream is sped up, with many of these units intended to be reserved for Asia next month.

After the Next-Gen system first launched on November 12th, Sony managed to ship 3.4 million PS5s within the first four weeks that the console was available for purchase. This is a larger initial release than any PlayStation console in the company’s history, beating out the previous PS4, which had a similar lack of stock in 2013, and the PS2, which still holds the record for most console sales overall. However, seeing that the market is clearly still anxious to get their hands on the new system, Sony is planning on shipping even more units in 2021, possibly looking to break even more PlayStation records.

The reporting from DigiTimes suggests that Sony is planning on shipping somewhere between 16 and 18 million more units in 2021 as the company intends to increase the supply stream of the console. This could mean that in a few months, players looking for the new console may not have to wait for periodic PS5 restocking alerts in order to have a chance of purchasing one. However, it appears that many of these units will be reserved for the Asia market in January, so it may be a while before the ramp up affects worldwide availability of the Next-Gen console.

Considering the major hype for Sony’s newest console, it doesn’t come as much of a surprise that the console is managing to move so many units as it launches. Even as the problems that owners found with PS5 consoles shortly after release became public, the system still remains one of the most demanding topics of the year, with players desperately trying to get a hold of units for themselves. So, while the current sales numbers are impressive, and Sony’s upcoming rollout looks massive, it may still be coming short of the overwhelming demand.

The PS5 is available now at most major retailers while supplies last.
