Wonder Woman 1984 has finally hit HBO Max and people can finally see everything that DC has been holding back since the beginning of the Coronavirus pandemic. While the reviews are a little mixed, the film has certainly been successful, and a sequel is already in the works. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, director Patty Jenkins discussed her vision of Wonder Woman, and the future of the franchise.
As part of the interview, the director discussed Wonder Woman 1984, and what it meant to craft a sequel to one of the more successful DC film projects. One of the concerns brought up was the long history of superhero films with underwhelming continuations. Jenkins didn’t seem phased by that challenge, however, remarking that with a sequel there is more room to stretch the ideas involved: “I think you can get to do something more powerful sometimes, because you’re just proving proof of concept the first time.”
Also discussed was Wonder Woman’s unique motivations compared to other heroes. While many superheroes have a tragic backstory or some external motivation that compels them to fight, Wonder Woman doesn’t have any easy inciting incident to point towards why she remains among humanity and protecting people. Jenkins argues that in some ways Wonder Woman is more about pushing humanity forward, and representing a sort of self-betterment: “She’s less about fighting and she’s more about confronting a point of view.”
Patty Jenkins is often cited as a notable female director who often casts female leads in her movies. That reputation can often be a sort of baggage, however, and she pushed back on the idea that she was making “women’s films.” “Every movie I make may have a female lead coincidentally, but I don’t make ‘women’s movies.’ I’m just making movies for everybody that might have female leads, you know? And so the world is slowly coming around.” She also mentioned how being saddled with the label of “female director” could sometimes be a drag, but she was happy to be moving the conversation forward in whatever way she could.
Lastly, the topic of future Wonder Woman films came up, and Jenkins played her cards close to her chest. While she admits that Wonder Woman’s story will continue whether or not she is in the director’s chair, Jenkins did say that she has plans for two more stories she would like to tell if she gets the chance. “The story continues after this in movies that I may or may not direct, but I have two more stories that become the completion of this story and it’s all about women stepping in as women, in the most loving kind pure and natural way. And making a difference in the world without having to change who they are to do it.”
Depending on how the studio decides to proceed and what the future of the DC Film Universe holds, Jenkins may very well get the chance to make Wonder Woman 3 and Wonder Woman 4 according to the stories she wants to tell. Hopefully, she can realize her vision and make those films everything she wants them to be.
