Is Xbox Game Pass Bringing Back Red Dead Redemption 2?

Xbox Game Pass is easily one of the best values in gaming today, and those who keep up with its coming and goings likely follow it on social media. A common way it reveals new coming games is by “leaking” confidential emails from Melissa McGamepass, which is amusing to say the least. Humorously, its New Year’s resolution was to stop doing this, but the Xbox Game Pass social media platform has already “leaked” some interesting new information.

While outlining a few things happening over the next month or so, perhaps the most interesting information is how Xbox Game Pass is bringing back a game it had previously removed. Of course, this opened the floodgates on speculation as to what this game could be, and one of the leading speculations is that it’s Red Dead Redemption 2.

Without a doubt, Red Dead Redemption 2 was one of the biggest games to grace the service. Many were excited when this was announced in April 2020, as its longform story-telling is not only highly-praised, it’s the perfect game for many to immerse themselves in while dealing with the ongoing pandemic. Unfortunately, it was a short-lived stint as Game Pass removed it in September 2020.

In so many ways, it is the definition of “when we added [REDACTED] and everyone was happy but then it left and everyone was sad?” As a result, it wouldn’t really be surprising to see Red Dead Redemption 2 come back, and it would indeed make many happy. However, when compared to Fallout 4 (the other game leading in speculation here), it does seem less likely compared to it.

Namely, Red Dead Redemption 2 did JUST leave Game Pass in September 2020. While that feels like a long time ago, it really isn’t, and it likely means that Xbox would be forking out for the game yet again. To do so in such a small time span is quite odd, no matter how much fans may want it. On the other hand, Fallout 4 makes more sense than RDR2 at least. With Microsoft in the process of purchasing Bethesda and it leaving Game Pass much earlier than RDR2, it’s about the same in terms of popularity.

Ultimately, there’s a bunch of stuff it could be, so it’s best not to pull all the eggs in one basket right now. It’ll likely be confirmed soon, but all things considered, Red Dead Redemption 2 is a contender albeit an unlikely one. It’s likely enough that, if someone is considered purchasing it, they should perhaps wait and see what’ll come of this announcement. But it’s not likely enough that fans should be readying to cowboy up.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is available now on PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
