The Uncharted movie has the opportunity to be a huge hit, something that is rare for live-action films that are crossovers for video games and flicks. While the Sonic the Hedgehog movie had massive box office success, many video games to movie transitions end up as flops. However, if the recent images from the Uncharted movie are proof of anything, the film will at least be very close to the source material.
The official Twitter page for the Uncharted movie tweeted out four images to build hype for the upcoming film. Uncharted is one of the most anticipated movies 0f 2021, so these pictures only multiply that excitement.
Interestingly, the images don’t show any pictures of Nathan Drake, or at least directly. One picture has an image of what seems to be Drake’s arm, but other than that, all of the pictures are of important items, decorations, and more; such as a map, a cross, a key, etc. The images look more like an Uncharted game for PS5 than a movie, but that could be by design. The more the promotion for this film looks like the games, the better.
Other than the arm possibly being Nathan Drake, Tom Holland (who presented at The Game Awards 2020) is nowhere to be found in the images here. However, both he and Mark Walberg are “tagged” in the images, which is intriguing. With the movie still set to release in 2021, it is likely that fans can expect a big trailer sometime in the near future, which of course would include more than Tom Holland’s arm.
With the new Monster Hunter movie possibly not covering development costs, video game movies continue to prove that films like Sonic the Hedgehog and Detective Pikachu are the anomalies and that more often than not they are not successful. Uncharted has a legitimate shot to help change that narrative as well, however. With an all-star cast and AAA source material to work with, the movie could be a big hit.
Many fans believe that there is no reason that Uncharted cannot be a modern-day Indiana Jones. Of course, it would have differences, as the games have had a touch of heart that maybe the Indiana Jones movies didn’t quite have, while the Indy movie perhaps had a cheesy charm that the games didn’t have. Regardless, the games are remembered as some of the best of the last decade-plus. There are others who think that movies and video games simply need to stay apart. The two mediums deserve to be enjoyed for what they are. Video games can tell stories that movies can’t, and vise versa.
