Wonder Woman 1984 Sees A Drastic New Year’s Box Office Decline

Just like in the comics and film Wonder Woman swept in on Christmas Day to save ailing theaters in North America from their dire situation. Overall reception for Wonder Woman 1984 was positive at first and the box office reflected some people were eager to watch the movie in a theater, rather than on HBO Max.

All that prompted Warner Bros. Pictures chairman Toby Emmerich to confirm there would indeed be a Wonder Woman 3 to close out the trilogy and, of course, that both Patty Jenkins and Gal Gadot would come back for that entry. Jenkins particularly has been busy promoting the film and even hinted at the possibility of a fourth Wonder Woman she has in store, though even the director herself doesn’t know if she’ll stick around for that.

However, all that was over a week ago, and a new year means new problems, such as Wonder Woman 1984 falling off significantly from its box office performance after Christmas. As Deadline reports, Wonder Woman saw a 67% drop in revenue from the $16.7m it recouped on its first weekend to $5.5m, now totaling $28.5 in the United States ($118.5m globally), thus hinting that most who wanted to see the movie in a cinema, possibly already did.

Though a tame New Year’s weekend could also be blamed for Wonder Woman’s worsening results, the rest of the films currently in theaters like The Croods: A New Age, Monster Hunter, Pinnochio or Tom Hanks’ News of the World all saw a slight increase in ticket sales, or at least managed to hold on to their previous numbers.

One element that may have also played its part in Wonder Woman’s box office decline may be the movie’s reputation. Though initially very well received by critics before release, since the film premiered it has received its fair share of criticism from insiders and moviegoers, even being downgraded on most sites that put out an audience score, where it places well below the first Wonder Woman film from 2017.

With Wonder Woman 1984 being available on HBO Max for free, for at least 20 more days, there’s also the matter of how much theater revenue is being eaten away by streaming. All in all, Wonder Woman 1984 is proving to be far from the sequel studio executives and fans could have hoped for, one that may not even turn profitable for a few more weeks.

Wonder Woman 1984 is currently available in theaters worldwide and on HBO Max.
