Hollywood is no stranger to adaptation. From video games, to books, to remakes of other movies, the process of taking intellectual property and building up a brand new silver screen epic is practically an art form in and of itself. A few screenwriters are going to be facing a particularly interesting challenge, however, as news has just broken of a very interesting adaptation coming down the pipeline.
As Deadline reports: Ashok Amritraj’s Hyde Park Entertainment Group and Endeavor Content are working together to create a feature film based on the famous cube. Not only that, but Hyde Park is also partnering with Glassman Media in order to produce a game show centered around the Rubik’s Cube as well.
As of right now, there are no further details about what either project will feature. Presumably, the game show will be based around solving the cube, or at least feature challenges in some way related to Rubik’s Cube-style puzzles, but it’s all speculation at this point.
In 1974 Erno Rubik invented the Rubik’s Cube, and thus a new generation of puzzle-solving was born. In 1980 Rubik licensed out the design for mass production. since then, over 450 million Rubik’s cubes have been sold. The toy not only served as an amusing past-time for children and adults, but it also spawned a competitive community where dedicated individuals raced to solve their cube faster than anyone else.
As a pop culture phenomenon, the influence of the Rubik’s cube is undeniable. It has the iconic design of a simple, colorful cube made of 6, 9×9 faces, and the cube has been referenced, displayed, and discussed in shows of all types, almost always to demonstrate the intelligence of some character or other.
The more interesting question is how the studio plans to spin a full feature film out of a toy cube. Granted, the Rubik’s Cube has a long history and legacy, ripe for exploration, but reporting seems to imply the film will be less of a documentary, and more of a traditional film. Perhaps some sort of dramatization of the toy’s history is in order, or maybe they will go all out and try to spin a fully original film out of a puzzle with no backstory. Whatever’s on the table, it will be interesting to see how this project progresses, and to speculate about the many possibilities.
