Although some might not know the name off the top of their head, Virtuous Games has quickly built a vast portfolio of work over the last few years, working alongside some big studios to deliver Nintendo Switch ports of several classic games. From the recently released XCOM 2 Collection to Dark Souls Remastered, L.A Noire, and BioShock: The Collection, the team has built up quite the reputation when it comes to custom-fitting iconic titles onto the handheld device.
It seems the developer isn’t done quite yet though, recently revealing in an interview with Automaton Media that it’s very excited to continue porting games to the Nintendo Switch. The interview was conducted with developers Andy Fong and Lukas Codr, who ran through the process of getting games to run on Nintendo’s immensely popular handheld gaming system.
Although the interview runs through the technical complications that come with porting a large experience to the Switch, it also discussed a little more about the studio’s future. “The majority of companies in the business of porting games to the Nintendo Switch have been progressively improving their techniques,” Codr claims during the interview, citing that a lot of studios began through simple and safe optimization ports. Over time, however, it seems companies like Virtuous have learned a lot more about the Switch’s capabilities, with Codr stating that the studio is far more in tune with the console’s “strengths and weaknesses.” As such, the developer claims that the team is constantly “leveling up,” revealing that he feels Virtuous Games is now “several levels higher than less experienced teams.”
It’s clear Codr and the developers over at Virtuous Games feel their work is constantly improving, leading to better Switch ports through every outing. Hopefully, fans will get to see exactly what the team is cooking up soon, which seems likely considering the company worked on three new titles in 2020 alone. The rest of the interview gives a clearer insight into how Virtuous Games’ process works, with Fong explaining how the team measures performance in both TV and handheld mode.
When it comes to Switch ports, there’s a number of classic games slated to hit the console in 2021, including Super Mario 3D World, Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire, Subnautica, and Scott Pilgrim vs The World: The Game. There are also several other huge original titles coming to the Switch this year, including No More Heroes 3, Bravely Default 2, and Monster Hunter Rise. It’ll be interesting to see whether Virtuous Games adds anything to the list of upcoming Switch experiences as the company continues to work into 2021.
