Announced earlier today, Xbox Game Pass will be getting seven new titles during January, including Injustice 2, What Remains of Edith Finch, and PES’ 2021 update. Yet, it seems Microsoft’s on-demand gaming platform won’t be the only subscription service offering some brand new games for January, with PlayStation Now revealing its new lineup of free titles primed to become available to subscribers this month.
While it can’t match Xbox’s seven games, PlayStation Now is offering three new experiences for subscribers, with the lineup featuring a city-builder, a racing title, and a strategic survival game. The games available are The Crew 2, Frostpunk: Console Edition, and Surviving Mars, with the trio all available to download on PlayStation Now from today.
PlayStation has cited The Crew 2 as the headliner for this month, with the Ubisoft-developed driving game originally hitting stores back in mid-2018. The concept sees players jump into a range of cars, boats, and planes, touring across a large, open-world rendition of North America. The game pulled in a middling 64 on Metacritic upon release, with critics citing that the title was beautiful and had great multiplayer but was buggy and slightly underwhelming in spite of its ambitious concept. Still, players who are intrigued by the premise of Ubisoft’s racing title can access it on PlayStation Now until July 5, 2021.
Frostpunk: Console Edition, on the other hand, is a port of the well-received PC survival city-sim that originally launched back in 2018. The title sees players take on the role of a leader of a post-apocalyptic, alternate-history city, where they must survive the dark and icy conditions left in the wake of a worldwide volcanic winter. Making impactful decisions to keep the city safe and continuing to expand is the name of the game here, as players have to decide whether the ends justify the means in a dog-eat-dog, post-apocalyptic world. It scored an 84 when it released on PC, while its PlayStation 4 version bagged an 87.
Finally, Surviving Mars is also a city-builder, this time seeing players construct a futuristic settlement on the surface of Mars. Of course, it won’t be that easy, with players having to balance growing resources and sending rockets to earth to gather food. Along the way, they’ll also have to contend with events known as mysteries, which see their settlements contend with disease, war, and even alien contact. Outside of PlayStation Now, PS4 and PS5 players can also grab their PlayStation Plus monthly titles, including Greedfall, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and, on PlayStation 5, Maneater.
