Michael C. Hall Wants To Make Up For The Dexter Finale With Revival

Dexter ended 7 years ago in 2013, and yet, it continues to crop up in the public consciousness as one of many shows that deserved a better ending than it got. Though the series was very successful and ran for 8 seasons, the one thing that every fan seems to agree is the show really fell apart towards the end, and that the finale, in particular, was very disappointing. Now it seems that even star Michael C. Hall agrees, remarking that even he wanted answers about why his character ended up where he did.

The show, for those who don’t remember, starred Hall as Dexter Morgan: forensic technician by day, and serial killer by night, or whenever he could squeeze the time in. Originally based on the novel Darkly Dreaming Dexter, the show followed Dexter as a sociopathic man who channeled his desire to kill by hunting down murderers that had escaped justice. While the first season was heavily based on the book, later seasons would branch out into new stories, introducing new killers to hunt down, and more complications for Morgan and his dark secret.

Spoilers ahead from here on out: The finale of the original Dexter series was certainly… controversial. Without getting into too much detail, by this point in the show Dexter’s sister, Deb, had discovered his secret but had decided to help cover up his crimes, allowing him to escape to Argentina with his new family, and Dexter is helping cover up some of hers as well. As the two of them confront the season 8 villain, Deb ends up getting shot and then suffers a stroke that leaves her in a permanent vegetative state.

In a final act of mercy, Dexter pulls the plug on his sister’s life support and dumps her body in the ocean during a hurricane. His boat ends up destroyed, and Dexter is presumed dead. Except he isn’t. In the last scene, Dexter, having escaped, is taking on a new life as an anonymous lumberjack somewhere far away from everything he left behind.

Needless to say, fans weren’t thrilled with this. Why does Dexter abandon his new family? How exactly did he escape? Does he really just get away with everything he’s done with no final reckoning? It was an ending that left a lot of loose ends untied for Dexter Morgan, and Michael C. Hall feels the same way now that a revival is around the corner, telling The Daily Beast: “People found the way that show left things pretty unsatisfying, and there’s always been a hope that a story would emerge that would be worth telling. I include myself in the group of people that wondered, ‘What the hell happened to that guy?'”

Hopefully the upcoming revival from Showtime will give fans a more conclusive ending to the series, one that addresses many of the concerns they had. It won’t be easy, but if done right, it could be a second chance to tie the bow off properly on a series that started off very strong.
