Developer Vanillaware’s visual novel/strategy hybrid 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim was one of the hidden gems of 2020. As with most Vanillaware titles, the game is niche and stayed under the radar, which is why it is considered one of the best games players might have missed in 2020. Now, publisher Atlus has revealed sales numbers for 13 Sentinels, and it looks like word of mouth has helped the game’s sales.
13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim tells a story about a group of high school-aged kids and their unusual connection to giant mech robots and each other. The twists and turns keep coming as the characters slowly learn just what is going on, and why these futuristic mechs are appearing. The pacing is perfect, and the story is so well written, 13 Sentinels is easily one of the best video game stories of 2020.
Atlus’ decision to share the worldwide sales numbers for 13 Sentinels is not an entirely common practice in the industry. That said, the game has amassed sales of over 300,000 units since its release. The game was released in Japan in November 2019 before reaching the rest of the world in September 2020.
Observers are under the impression that the release of sales figures means that Atlus is happy with how the game has performed. Vanillaware titles never set records, but they have a proven track record of quality, and a loyal following. Fans of the game would like to see this sales number higher, with many claiming it to be their game of the year for 2020.
The hybrid of genres in 13 Sentinels might not be for everyone, but on the strength of its unique visuals and excellent narrative, it’s definitely worth a look.
13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim is available now for PS4.
