The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim has become a veritable institution in the video game industry. The acclaimed RPG is turning 10 years old this year, and Skyrim fans have continuously returned to the game as it releases on new platforms while Bethesda works on The Elder Scrolls 6. Skyrim‘s modding community has played a big part in its longevity, and one creator has been working on a project that adds new content from another major fantasy property.
On July 25, 2020, a modder who goes by Gardden uploaded “A Witcher’s Adventure” to Nexus Mods, adding elements from The Witcher universe created by Andrzej Sapkowski and popularized by CD Projekt Red’s video game adaptations into Skyrim. The mod has been updated since, and on January 1, 2021 a backport compatible with Skyrim: Legendary Edition was released alongside the more modern Special Edition.
In its current iteration, “A Witcher’s Adventure” adds five signs from The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, numerous potions and ingredients, more than 40 swords, nine new monsters, Kaer Fendargh as a Worldspace, and a Skill Tree with 33 perks, according to its landing page on Nexus Mods. There is also a three-part main quest and two side quests included, which should offer plenty for anyone interested in seeing the world of Skyrim take on a whole new fantasy setting.
CD Projekt Red’s latest venture, Cyberpunk 2077, has not been near as much of a critical success as The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Its problematic launch led to Sony pulling the game off its PlayStation Store, and CD Projekt Red has also been hit with a class-action lawsuit from some of its investors.
That being said, many still have affection for CD Projekt’s Witcher series, which helped popularize the original Polish novels and led to other adaptations such as an ongoing television series on Netflix. While Cyberpunk 2077 contains references to The Witcher universe, anyone looking to see the fantasy-adventure game’s charm appear in new entries can turn to Gardden’s mod as an in-depth alternative.
Skyrim is the most popular game on Nexus Mods, hosting over 65,000 files that have collectively been downloaded over 1.8 billion times as of this writing. Many mods there and on other sites introduce new gameplay elements or mechanics, but others are purely technical achievements, such as one that allows Skyrim to run at 60FPS on Xbox Series X.
Meanwhile, The Witcher 3 also has an active modding community for those who would rather return to its world over Cyberpunk 2077‘s Night City. While some mods add entirely new mechanics, there are also more silly choices such as one mod that replaces all The Witcher 3‘s romance options with Yennefer.
The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim is available now on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
