Netflix App To Be Discontinued on Wii U, 3DS | Game Rant

As the gaming giants move forward with new console generations, they inevitably have to decided when to stop supporting different features on older consoles. Nintendo has decided to end support for Netflix on the older Nintendo 3DS and Wii U game systems.

Nintendo consoles have generally had some form of Netflix available since the Wii first had the capability in 2010. Netflix became available for the Nintendo 3DS in 2011, and was available for the Wii U’s launch in late 2012. It is quite interesting that service for the Netflix streaming service on the Wii U lasted way longer than streaming service Quibi did as a whole.

In a post on the company’s customer support website, Nintendo announced a Netflix Service Discontinuation for the Nintendo 3DS Family (the New Nintendo 3DS, New Nintendo 3DS XL, New Nintendo 2DS XL, Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo 3DS XL, and Nintendo 2DS), along with the Wii U Deluxe and Wii U Basic. The app itself was actually removed from the eShop at the end of 2020, so it cannot be downloaded by new users at this point.

For those who have downloaded the app before on any of the specified systems, it can currently be re-downloaded. However, Nintendo plans to end service completely for the Netflix app on June 30th, 2021. This leaves players with one less thing to do on those systems, especially since Twitter can no longer be accessed on the 3DS or Wii U either.

There is still no update for whether Nintendo plans to add the streaming service to the Switch. Previously, it was even reported that there were no plans to ever have Netflix on the Switch. While this exclusion is confusing for many Switch owners, the console at least has apps for YouTube and Hulu, two major services.

Either way, it looks like Nintendo is focused on putting its energy into its current generation console. Much like Microsoft and Sony, which are already discontinuing certain last-generation PS4 and Xbox One consoles to focus on the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. For now, Nintendo Switch owners will just have to continue waiting for any news of Netflix coming to the console.
