Twitch Streamer Sodapoppin Talks About Quitting OfflineTV Rust Server

Multiplayer sandbox survival game Rust is experiencing a huge resurgence online thanks to the private OfflineTV server which has brought together a number of big name streamers. The downside to having those personalities in the same place is the inevitable conflict that comes from that. Controversial streamer xQc has made stream sniping accusations against a number of players, and the latest to feel his wrath is Twitch streamer Chance ‘Sodapoppin’ Morris.

The Rust OfflineTV server started up a little over a week ago, and has steadily generated headlines as the personalities of the streamers involved have clashed. Most of the trouble revolves around stream sniping, something that is a big problem for a number of games when streamed on Twitch. In a game like Rust, knowing where other players are, and what they are up to, is valuable. Stream sniping is minor compared to the death threats that streamer ash_on_lol received from fans of xQc.

While the game has been fun for some, the constant accusations coming from xQc have exhausted players. The latest to find himself in xQc’s crosshairs, Sodapoppin, is considering quitting the Rust OfflineTV server completely, the stress of having the finger pointed at him being too much to handle. He says about the accusations “it’s frustrating, because you have to justify every action you’ve made to a bunch of people that aren’t ever gonna watch a stream, and are gonna side with who they want to side with…”

The OfflineTV server could have been less overrun by drama if they had more carefully screened who they were inviting to the server. But with the inclusion of more outspoken streamers like xQc and Myth, barbs were likely to be thrown. Which is why the whole Rust OfflineTV server feels like reality TV.

The frustration felt by some of the streamers has led to a clear fracture between those who prefer to roleplay a bit more in the game, and those who are in it for the PvP elements. It didn’t take long for friend of the OfflineTV group, Abe ‘BaboAbe’ Chung to announce a new Rust server where roleplay would feature more prominently.

Inviting someone like xQc into a server comes with inherent risks. The streamer has been suspended from Twitter and Twitch at various times for a number of different infractions. And while there are moments where the Rust server is enjoyable, it seems that for Sodapoppin, there just aren’t enough of those moments to warrant hanging around.

Rust is available now for Mac & PC.
