‘Loki’ Creator Writing Star Wars Movie For Marvel’s Kevin Feige

After joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the writer of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and creator of Disney Plus’ Loki series, Michael Waldron is set to venture to a galaxy far, far, away. Lucasfilm has tapped Waldron to pen the screenplay for the developing Star Wars film produced by Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige.

With the Skywalker saga now complete following the release of The Rise of Skywalker, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy is preparing a new Star Wars era films with a slate of projects for Disney Plus and features exploring new corners of the fictional universe. Among the projects being developed at Lucasfilm is a Star Wars film produced by Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, who first discussed the possibility of contributing to the franchise after a summer 2019 meeting with Kennedy and Disney co-chairmen Alan Horn and Alan Bergman.

Deadline reports Waldron will pen the script for Feige’s Star Wars film as part of a recent deal he signed with Disney. Furthermore, the terms of the deal mean Waldron will likely be brought back in some capacity for a second season of Loki. The outlet posits that the rare deal is a sign of Disney’s confidence in Waldron and his attachment to the Star Wars film adds momentum to the project, which has yet to begin production or receive a release date. Known for producing multiple episodes of Dan Harmon’s Rick and Morty, Waldron joined the Disney family as the head writer and executive producer of Loki in 2019 before being tapped to rewrite the script for Sam Raimi’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Both Loki and the Doctor Strange sequel are expected to factor heavily into Marvel Studios’ plans to explore the multiverse and alternate worlds in the MCU franchise. While Loki will see Tom Hiddleston reprise his role as the God of Mischief, the series will focus on the version of the character who escaped custody after the battle of New York due to the time-traveling exploits of the Avengers in Endgame. The events of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, on the other hand, will be set up by Disney Plus’ WandaVision, in which Scarlet Witch and Vision find themselves living in an alternate reality reminiscent of classic television sitcoms.

As for the Star Wars franchise, Kennedy recently announced 10 television projects being developed for Disney Plus and a feature film from Wonder Woman 1984 director Patty Jenkins titled Rogue Squadron. Curiously, an update on Feige’s Star Wars film was not provided during the same presentation for Disney’s Investor Day.

Also absent from the presentation was any mention of the previously announced Star Wars trilogy from Rian Johnson. While there has not been any official news regarding the trilogy’s future, fans suspect the divisive response to Johnson’s The Last Jedi may have hindered the project’s chances of moving forward.

Loki is scheduled to premiere on Disney Plus in May 2021.
