The conversation about some of the greatest games of 2020 would be incomplete without the mention of The Last of Us Part II, the much-awaited sequel to the first title that ended up pushing the boundaries of gaming to an entirely different level. While people might have had mixed reactions when it came to the risks that the game took with its story, there’s no denying that the overall experience was still a wildly enjoyable one that most people should definitely experience at some point.
So, it’s only a given that people who finish off this brilliant title would obviously want to enjoy more games in the same vein that would elicit a ton of emotions in them. While there’s no game that’s exactly like The Last of Us Part II, there are certainly a number of games that can certainly come close to scratching that itch.
Keeping this in mind, here are ten story-heavy titles that should satiate any fan of The Last of Us Part II.
10 Tomb Raider
After the Tomb Raider series was pretty much stuck in mediocrity post the disastrous launch of The Angel of Darkness, it was clear that the franchise was in need of a much-needed reboot that would modernize the series and make it all the more accessible for a whole new generation of gamers.
This was achieved with the Tomb Raider reboot in 2013, which ended up being a fantastic and entertaining romp that explored Lara’s character in the past and showed her transformation into the tomb raider that we all know and love.
9 BioShock Infinite
The original BioShock was definitely a great game in its own right, but one can argue that it was BioShock Infinite that made the franchise all the more accessible and mainstream… mainly due to the brilliant story and the way it was told in the game.
The story of Booker DeWitt and Elizabeth is bound to give off the same vibes as Joel and Ellie, which can definitely prove to be a treat for gamers who loved the second part of The Last of Us but wished that there was more of the same dynamic that was explored in the first game.
8 Spec Ops: The Line
The Last of Us Part II is ultimately a commentary on the futility of violence and revenge, but there were some people who were less than pleased with the manner in which these themes were handled through the narrative.
For these players, it’s very much possible that Spec Ops: The Line could definitely be right up their alley. The game manages to tell a brilliant tale that criticizes everything… including the very act of video game violence itself.
7 Far Cry 5
While most people might scoff at the idea of a Ubisoft game being present on this list, there’s no denying the fact that Far Cry 5 is pretty much Ubisoft’s formula that’s been perfected to a T.
The world map is a treat to explore, player freedom is quite abundant, the combat is an absolute blast to play through… and the story manages to be a brilliant experience that’s powered by some amazing performances from the characters, especially when it comes to the Seed family.
6 Ghost Of Tsushima
Sucker Punch Productions had been on the down-low for the longest time in the previous generation, with their last game coming all the way back in 2014. However, the release of Ghost of Tsushima proves that the six years between this game and the last were definitely not wasted by the studio.
It’s pretty much obvious that Ghost of Tsushima is easily one of the best-looking and playing games on the PlayStation 4, with the story also being a surprisingly great part of the game as well.
5 Marvel’s Spider-Man
Speaking of games that were highly anticipated before launch and ended up blowing everyone’s socks off upon release, one simply can’t wait to mention the masterpiece that is Marvel’s Spider-Man. Insomniac’s shot at a Spider-Man game ended up being one of the greatest superhero video games of all time, and definitely the greatest game that the wall-crawler has ever featured in.
The story of Peter Parker is certainly way more mature and serves as a breath of fresh air from the usual stories that Spider-Man has been featured in, making for a rather enjoyable experience indeed.
4 Horizon Zero Dawn
Horizon Zero Dawn was an ambitious attempt by Guerrilla Games to craft a new IP for the PlayStation 4, and it must be said that the company managed to accomplish the same in a resounding fashion with the release of this title.
It goes without saying that Horizon Zero Dawn is easily one of the greatest open-world adventures on console, featuring a brilliant and well-realized world that manages to explain its somewhat ludicrous setting in a brilliant and believable fashion.
3 God Of War
The God of War reboot had fans anticipating the return of one of the most iconic characters in video gaming history, and the manner in which Santa Monica Studios managed to revitalize the franchise should definitely be commended.
It was a given that the combat and graphics of the reboot were bound to be brilliant, but it’s the story that took everyone for a wild and emotional ride. The bond between Kratos and his son Atreus is truly beautiful, and watching it blossom is easily one of the biggest highlights in the entire game.
2 Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End
Of course, it was only a given that the best recommendation to enjoy a story-heavy game like The Last of Us Part II… would be another Naughty Dog title itself.
Uncharted 4 serves as the final chapter in Nate’s story and proves to be the most emotional one of the lot, featuring excellent performances and story moments that allow us to finally bid a satisfactory goodbye to one of the greatest adventurers in gaming history.
1 The Last Of Us
However, it was only a given that the most fitting recommendation to play a narratively-rick game like The Last of Us Part II would be the first game in the series itself.
The Last of Us kickstarted the tale of Joel and Ellie in definitive fashion, with the tale of the lovable anti-hero taking center stage as he goes through a bunch of emotional moments before culminating in an ending that will definitely prove to be one of the most debatable decisions ever made in gaming history.
