New images have been released that could what Samsung’s upcoming Odyssey VR Headset might look like, based on documentation filed by the hardware developer. This marks a substantial step forward for Samsung as a gaming hardware developer, considering that much of what the company has made before has often been a wider market of phones, monitors, and PC components.
The new images come from LetsGoDigital, having built the renders based on official patents that have been filed by Samsung in preparation for this upcoming VR device. So, while these renders may be accurate to the patents, it may not be exactly reflective of the final Odyssey VR Headset.
As the patent suggests, the Odyssey VR Headset renders have a few different versions with differing, stylized flair added to the front of the peripheral. One standout is the design reminiscent of a fly’s eyeball, with interconnected shapes that make two polygonal domes. These design aspects may be an attempt to lean into the futuristic designs of the VR gaming market that currently dominate the genre. However, some more standard versions with flat or slightly curved covers have also been rendered, with many appearing similar to the industry standards for VR headsets that players are already used to.
Another interesting reveal from these renders is that the controllers included with the Odyssey VR Headset have a familiar look to the Oculus Quest’s hardware and peripherals. There are a few differences in design that helps Samsung’s controllers stand out, such as a solid ring that appears to wrap around the player’s wrist for added stability and keeps users from throwing them while in VR. This, combined with a number of ergonomic buttons, appear to give a fluid feel to the control of the system, with a hands-on functionality that will likely merge well with the floating hands mechanics of most VR titles. Additionally, the connected headphones on the headset follows another trend of integrating audio options directly into the peripheral.
So far, these early renders of the Odyssey VR Headset have a decent look to them, matching up closely with the competition while also giving their own sleek interpretation of the design. Of course, these renders are still an early example of what the headset might look like, and not a one-to-one representation of what will be released. Regardless, with Samsung stepping further into gaming technology, this headset could be a make or break moment for the hardware developer in this market.
