After hitting the big screen and HBO Max as Cheetah in Wonder Woman 1984, Kristen Wiig returns to her comedy roots for Barb And Star Go To Vista Del Mar. Wiig reteams with her Bridesmaids co-writer Annie Mumulo for the new movie.
Mumulo stars as the titular Barb while Wiig stars as her best friend Star. Both women also co-wrote the script. The trailer takes an interesting approach to highlighting the movie, opting not to show the faces of Wiig and Mumulo in their entirety. The two head to a swanky hotel for surf, sand, and an encounter with a villain.
The movie, according to Lionsgate’s official summary, sees the two best friends leave their small hometown for a vacation – for the first time ever – to Vista Del Mar, Florida. Their vacation takes a strange turn when they end up embroiled in the middle of a villain’s plan to kill everyone in town.
In addition to Wiig and Mumulo’s comedic talent, the film has assembled a group of comedy veterans to fill out the cast. Wendi McLendon-Covey (The Goldbergs, Bridesmaids), Damon Wayans Jr. (New Girl, Happy Endings), and Vanessa Bayer (Saturday Night Live, Will & Grace) also star. Jamie Dornan (Fifty Shades Trilogy, The Fall), usually known for his more dramatic roles, rounds out the group. Will Ferrell and his producing partner Adam McKay produced the film under Gloria Sanchez Productions, so there’s plenty of comedic talent behind the scenes as well.
Some movie fans might have seen the trailer in early 2020 before theater shutdowns began, but this is the first Lionsgate has released it online. Originally slated for a July 31, 2020 release, Barb & Star was rescheduled for a July 16, 2021 theatrical debut. The trailer, however, features a new release date of February 12, 2021. Barb & Star will be skipping theaters entirely and heading straight for premium video on demand services for streaming.
Fans love to see a Wiig and Mumolo team up and have been eagerly awaiting another one since the release of Bridesmaids in 2011. They earned several award show nominations for their work together, including an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay. Time (and video on demand) will tell if Barb And Star Go To Vista Del Mar has the same magic.
Barb And Star Go To Vista Del Mar will premiere on VOD on February 12, 2021.
