Fans Compare ‘Super Saiyan’ Mario in Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury to Sonic and Goku

A new trailer has dropped for Super Mario 3D World, giving players a more detailed look at the extra content, Bowser’s Fury. With only a month until release, the new trailer for 3D World is likely the last look before the game is released. One part of the trailer has caught the internet’s attention in particular, and that is when Mario takes a page from Dragon Ball and goes “Super Saiyan.”

Super Mario 3D World was one of the few first-party Wii U titles that had not made the jump to Switch, so when 3D World was finally announced for Switch, many fans were excited. With this year being Mario’s 35th anniversary, a number of Mario games have been brought back for those that missed them the first time around. Super Mario 3D World was long rumored to be getting such treatment.

In today’s trailer, the big reveal is how the Bowser’s Fury additional content will play. Unlike the main 3D World approach which features linear levels, Bowser’s Fury feels more open, perhaps like Super Mario Odyssey. But, the transformation at the end of the trailer is lighting up Twitter feeds everywhere. Mario snags a giant Cat Bell power-up, which transforms him into a humongous version of Cat Mario. In the transformation, Mario grows a full mane that spikes up, drawing comparisons to both Goku and Gold Sonic for its “Super Saiyan” qualities.

The reactions were immediate, with fans gravitating to Mario’s new powered-up form. Some merely noted the resemblance, while others quickly crafted fan art for the new Mario. Some fans wondered how Mario learned Goku’s technique, while others imagined Goku deciding to switch places with Mario instead. The gameplay and the reveal of what Bowser’s Fury entails are now secondary to the Super Saiyan Mario.

Super Mario 3D World is getting a pretty big marketing push as the game’s release date approaches. Mario 35th anniversary events are still ongoing, but the reveal of a Mario-themed Switch console is an exciting development. The console features Mario’s iconic color scheme, a healthy dose of red with some appropriate blue accents. The investment around 3D World shows that Nintendo is excited to be re-releasing the Wii U classic.

To go along with all of this, Nintendo also has plans to re-release its Bowser and Bowser Jr. Amiibo when Super Mario 3D World drops.

Soon players will have the game in hand, and will be able to check out everything going on in the Bowser’s Fury content. Based on reactions online, it looks like fans are more than ready to go Super Saiyan on Bowser in February.

Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury will launch on Nintendo Switch on February 12th.
