Xbox Game Pass gives players instant access to over 100 games, but there’s such a wide selection, that players may not exactly know where to start. Xbox Game Pass makes things a little easier by offering a few different categories that players can browse through, but even then, the sheer number of options may be overwhelming. As is the case with services like Netflix, Xbox Game Pass subscribers spend more time looking for something to play instead of actually playing a game.
One of the Xbox Game Pass categories that players can choose is Indie, which collects all of the Indie games available for the service in one spot. This includes Indie games of all kinds, so players can dive into this category and get a real variety in genres.
Here are five great indie games that Xbox Game Pass subscribers may want to try. Keep in mind that the Xbox Game Pass lineup of games changes frequently, and so some of these games may eventually be rotated out of the service.
The vast majority of horror games put players in the role of a helpless victim, largely incapable of defending themselves against whatever threat they have to deal with. Carrion, however, flips that concept on its head, advertising itself as a reverse-horror game. Carrion‘s reverse-horror game concept sees players take on the role of a deadly, near-unstoppable creature that can grow, shapeshift, and even control the minds of its victims.
Carrion has players grabbing enemies by the ankle and smashing them to pieces against the ceiling, as well as solving puzzles and avoiding hazards. It’s a Metroidvania game at its heart, with the disgusting red creature that players control earning new abilities that in turn allow it to reach previously inaccessible areas. Horror game fans looking for a different take on the genre or those just needing something to play on Xbox Game Pass should definitely make it a point to check out Carrion.
There are many great local co-op games on Xbox Game Pass, but one of the absolute best is undoubtedly Children of Morta. Children of Morta is a roguelike game where players take on the role of the Bergson family. Each Bergson family member has their own special abilities and skills, which definitely come in handy against Children of Morta‘s unrelenting waves of enemies. The game is designed so players will fail numerous times in their attempts to conquer its dungeons, but each run will get players more gold that they can use to power up their characters. The gameplay loop is addicting and rewarding, plus there are plenty of secrets to uncover and intense boss fights to enjoy. Children of Morta will keep Xbox Game Pass subscribers plenty busy, and it’s easily one of the standout indie titles available on the service.
For those unfamiliar with the Guacamelee franchise, it combines professional wrestling moves and a lucha libre aesthetic with classic Metroidvania gameplay to spectacular results. Guacamelee 2 builds on the foundation of the original game, adding new gameplay mechanics to keep the combat and exploration fresh, while providing plenty of challenging combat encounters and platforming puzzles to solve. The game’s sense of humor is as sharp as ever, and better yet, the entirety of Guacamelee 2 is playable in local co-op. Guacamelee 2 isn’t just one of the best indie games on Xbox Game Pass – it’s one of the best games available on the service, period.
Speaking of co-op multiplayer games, Overcooked 2 is another high quality Xbox Game Pass indie game that co-op fans won’t want to overlook. Overcooked 2 has players working together with friends to complete various food orders, though things tend to get out of hand pretty fast. Overcooked 2 has received many free updates since its launch, along with a slew of paid DLC, which has ensured that the game has a ton of content for fans to sink their teeth into. Overcooked 2 is sure to keep indie gaming fans busy for hours, especially if they are playing through the game in local or online co-op with friends.
Since the Streets of Rage IP is owned by Sega, most games in the series wouldn’t be classified as “indie.” However, Streets of Rage 4 is very much an independently-developed game, having been made and published by Dotemu instead of Sega. Sega entrusted the Streets of Rage license to Dotemu after the studio proved itself with a string of well-received games, and it’s safe to say that Streets of Rage 4 lived up to the hype and then some.
A modern take on the classic beat ’em up genre, Streets of Rage 4 is exactly what fans would want from a sequel to the old school franchise. It features plenty of classic throwbacks along with brand new gameplay features and mechanics to help it live up to modern standards. Nominated for numerous awards and earning critical acclaim, Streets of Rage 4 was one of the standout indie games of 2020, and Xbox Game Pass subscribers can check it out at no additional charge.
