The 3DS had a great run of almost ten years, but as of 2020 the console is dead – meaning there will not be any new (official) titles released for the system. This period for a game console is often a great time to start collecting games.
For this list only the base released of a game will be considered; special, limited, or collector’s editions will not be since they are just the regular version of a game packaged with some kind of collectible. Also, only North American releases of these games will be referenced for this list – imports (such as a Japanese version) of the game, even if in English or cheaper in price, will not be considered.
10 Winx Club: Saving Alfea
This game is based on an animated show featuring fairies titled The Winx Club. This game is so obscure it doesn’t even have a Wikipedia page. The game is a platform puzzle game – one where the player is apparently trying to save someone named Alfea. This game is very rare, but it is also not one that gamers tend to hang onto like a Grand Theft Auto title. Even so, anyone who wants to get a copy of this game should be prepared to pay anywhere from $55 to $65 dollar. There are six available on Ebay right now from U.S. based sellers.
9 FIFA ‘14
In some parts of the world the FIFA games are as easy to find as the Madden games are in North America. Previous seasons’ versions no doubt litter the bargain bins at game stores with price tags so low they can be bought win pocket change – again, like the Madden games in North America. The FIFA games do make it to North America, but in much lower numbers. Perhaps this is why FIFA ’14 is one of the rarer and more expensive 3DS games. As of the writing of this article, there are only four listings for this game on Ebay; the cheapest being $70 (shipping included).
8 Radiant Historia: Perfect Chronology
Radiant Historia: Perfect Chronology is the first of several games from Atlus to appear on this list. Atlus is notorious for releasing their games in low numbers. This generally causes the value of their games to remain constant with the retail price even when sold used – or in some cases far exceed the retail price in value.
The Radiant Historia games are role-playing games that are highly regarded by players and critics. There are many copies available on Ebay with a large variation in price. Expect to pay around $50 dollars for a loose game card and about $70 for a new, still sealed, copy.
7 Etrian Odyssey 5: Beyond The Myth
Another Atlus title, and another role-playing game. Etrian Odyssey 5: Beyind the Myth is a fairly standard RPG with an anime art-style. This is one of the best reviewed 3DS games released in North America. The game’s rareness combined with its fun factor equal a game that is still quite expensive. There are many available on Ebay. Most auctions for a complete-in-box copy start at around the $40.00 price range. The buy-it-now prices for a complete copy are about $55, and new, still sealed copies sell for about $75 (but can go as high as $100).
6 Persona Q2: New Cinema Labyrinth
The Persona games are some of Atlus’ most popular titles, and probably it best-selling franchise. The games in the Persona line are typically one part relationship simulator, and one part role-playing game. Persona Q2 is a spin-off of the main series and involves characters from other Persona games being trapped within a series of films (movies). This game is rare to see anywhere other than from online vendors and Ebay listings. Prices for a loose game card can go as high as $60. Complete-in-box prices are, on average, around $60. New, still sealed copies range from $75 to $100.
5 Rhythm Thief and The Emperor’s Treasure
This is a very rare 3DS game from Sega. In Rhythm Thief & The Emperor’s Treasure the player is a legendary art thief who must seeks to “unlock the secrets of his mysterious past”. This game is a rhythm-based puzzle game that somewhat resembles a digital board game at times.
Collects beware, this is a costly purchase – but not impossible to find. On Ebay this game sells for around $100 for a complete-in-box copy. A loose game card will still be about a $70 purchase. There are no new North American versions available on Ebay.
4 Dragon Quest 8: Journey Of The Cursed King
The Dragon Quest series began in the early 80s, and is still going to this day. Many of the games in the franchise were exclusive to the handheld Nintendo consoles and are standard JRPGs. Dragon’s Quest 8 was hailed for its fully 3D world and was nominated for numerous awards; including best handheld game of the year. The battles are the standard turn-based face-offs found in most JRGPs. There are several copies of this game available on Ebay. Loose games cards generally cost around $70, complete-in-box copies are around $85, and new copies are valued at around $100.
3 Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney
Many gamers only know of Phoenix Wright from his appearance as a playable character in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3. However, there are several Phoenix Wright story-based puzzle games that involve trials in court. The Professor Layton series are more of a straight puzzle game than the Phoenix Wright games, but are also story-driven. This puzzle game from Capcom combines the two franchises, and in addition to being rare it is also praised by critics and players. On Ebay a loose game card costs about $70. A complete-in-box copy ranges from $75 – $100, depending on its condition. By itself, the game’s case costs about $20.
2 Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse
Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse is the final Atlus game on this list, and it’s a game many 3DS owners have never heard about. This is a role-playing game set in post-apocalyptic Tokyo where the player controls a demon hunter that can persuade demons to fight for him. The game world is fully 3D, but combat takes place from a first person view. A loose game card typically sells for about $70 – $75 dollars. A complete-in-box copy, including the pins, sells for around $110. A new, still-sealed copy sells generally sells for about $125, but can be occasionally found for around $100.
1 Yo-Kai Watch Blasters: Red Cat Corps
Yo-Kai Watch Blasters: Red Cat Corps and its other version, Yo-Kai Watch Blasters: White Dog Squad, are extremely rare 3DS games. Both games are off-shoots of the main Yo-Kai Watch series;; that has a very loyal fan-base. The Blasters games are both beat’em-up style games that also involve a creature collecting aspect – similar to the Pokemon games. Except in this case the player is collecting small, cute, yokai (spirits). From their roster of yokai, players put together teams to battle other yokai and large boss creatures. On Ebay, a loose game card will usually be around $100. Complete-in-box copies sell for about $120. New copies will cost buyers anywhere from $120 to $200 dollars.
