Chris Evans May Return To The MCU As Captain America | Game Rant

Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Endgame concluded with Steve Rogers retiring from his role as Captain America, seemingly bringing an end to the First Avenger’s story. However, Chris Evans is now reportedly in talks to reprise his role in Captain America in a future MCU project.

After the Avengers successfully reverse Thanos’ decimation by traveling back in time to retrieve the infinity stones for themselves, Steve Rogers takes it upon himself to travel throughout the past in order to return the gems to the point where they were taken. However, instead of immediately returning to the present, Rogers opts to remain in the past and live out his life with his long-lost love Peggy Carter. After fulfilling his dream, Rogers returns to the present as an old man and passes the Captain America shield on to Sam Wilson, effectively concluding his multi-film story arc.

Now, Deadline reports Evans is heading towards closing a deal to reprise his role as Captain America in at least one more Marvel Studios project with an option for a second film as well. According to the outlet’s sources, the project is unlikely to be a standalone Captain America film and Evans’ role would instead be more akin to the supporting part Robert Downey Jr. played in Captain America: Civil War and Spider-Man: Homecoming. The idea of returning to the role of Captain America was reportedly brought to Evans’ attention in recent months and the actor became more open to the notion as weeks went by. An agreement between Evans and Marvel was reached at the beginning of the year, though the details on how he might return to the MCU are still being worked out.

Captain America’s retirement and his decision to hand the mantle to Sam Wilson will be explored in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, the second original series from Marvel Studios. Scheduled to premiere on Disney Plus in March 2021, the series will see Anthony Mackie’s Falcon and Sebastian Stan’s Winter Soldier teaming up to take on an anarchist group known as the Flag-Smashers. While Rogers chose Wilson to be his successor, the casting of Wyatt Russell as John Walker, a.k.a. US Agent, indicates the United States government in the series has other plans for the Captain America brand.

While Evans may not be voicing the character, Captain America is expected to return to the MCU in Marvel Studios’ What If…? series. The animated show, currently slated to debut on Disney Plus in mid-2021, will explore alternate worlds in which key events from the MCU films unfolded differently.

The possibility of seeing Evans’ return as Captain America may indicate Marvel Studios has plans for characters to crossover into each other’s projects more frequently than before. For instance, Christ Pratt’s Star-Lord is currently lined-up for an appearance in Chris Hemsworth’s Thor: Love and Thunder.

Avengers: Endgame is now available on Disney Plus.
