With COVID-19 forcing a number of major real-world attractions to close up shop, it seems many have had to take drastic measures while the wait for a vaccine continues. Super Nintendo World has delayed opening its doors due to the ongoing spread of the virus, and now, it seems Disneyland Resort has seen fit to cancel its popular annual pass program as it waits to discover when it can reopen its locations.
The announcement was made yesterday, with Disney contacting owners of the annual pass and issuing a statement to inform visitors that it would be ending the service. As for the official reason behind the news, Disney claims the cancelation is due to the “continued uncertainty of the [COVID-19] pandemic and limitations and expected restrictions around the reopening of our theme parks.”
The annual pass was an essential part of many local visitors’ interactions with the popular theme park, allowing them to enter Disneyland as frequently as they liked for a fixed yearly cost. It also netted them discounts on Disney merchandise and food, which saved the park’s biggest frequenters a lot of money. It was a crucial part of the park’s offerings and will be sorely missed by the numerous guests who partook in the program every year. As for those who already purchased a pass prior to the program’s cancelation, Disney is currently in the act of processing refunds, so they won’t be out of pocket due to the decision.
Those who held passes following the closure of the parks on March 14, 2020, will continue to get food and beverage discounts at the Downtown Disney and Buena Vista Street locations for the foreseeable future, while pass holders visiting both locations before February 25 will be able to get reductions on certain merchandise. Those worried that this spells the end for Disney’s yearly passes shouldn’t fret too much, with the company claiming that there will eventually be a new form of membership offered to frequenters of the park. In Disneyland Resort‘s statement, it claims this future pass will “utilize consumer insights to deliver choice, flexibility, and value.”
However, for now, the annual pass is no more. It’s a sensical decision considering the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic has rendered Disneyland a high-risk location that, as it admits, will not be able to open without heavy restrictions for quite some time. Until then, it seems pass holders who have been unable to utilize the program will at least get access to some discounts for their trouble. As it stands, Disney World hasn’t commented on whether it will also be ditching its annual pass program.
