Skyrim: 10 Rare & Unique Lines Of Dialogue You May Have Missed

For many players, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is a game that keeps on giving to this very day. Its massive nature and extensive attention to detail encourages multiple replays. Even with several playthroughs, it’s hard to scratch the surface when experiencing the game’s dialogue.

Some of Skyrim‘s most unique dialogue is easily lost amidst the thousands of lines of recorded content. Other examples can only be heard once certain conditions are met. Thus, a few hold the distinction of being quite rare. Certain players, even after sinking hundreds of hours into the game, may be surprised by the existence of some of these entries.

10 Hadvar Comments On The Wrong Armor

The iconic intro sequence to The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim features the destruction of Helgen by the return of the dragon Alduin. The player must make a choice when escaping the village: flee with Hadvar, an Imperial legionary, or Ralof, a Stormcloak rebel. If Hadvar is chosen the first armor set the Dragonborn obtains is Imperial gear. If Ralof is picked, it’s Stormcloak armor.

However, there is an extremely rare piece of dialogue that many players probably missed. If escaping with Hadvar, and the Dragonborn swaps out his kit for Stormcloak gear, a unique line is uttered. At the exit to the cave, Hadvar will say, “Better get out of that Stormcloak gear. Today is not the day to be dressed like a rebel.” A cool little detail that acknowledges the player for thinking outside the box.

9 Hermaeus Mora Mentions Miraak

Completing Hermaeus Mora’s side quest in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim rewards the player with the Oghma Infinium. When the Daedric Prince is encountered again in The Elder Scrolls V: Dragonborn questline he mentions the gift of the book in Apocrypha. It establishes continuity and is most likely the exchange most players experience on their first playthrough.

There actually exists an alternative piece of dialogue that plays if the quests are completed in reverse order. If Miraak is defeated first and the Dragonborn meets Hermaeus Mora again in “Discerning the Transmundane,” the Daedric Prince will comment on this fact. He will state that he’s impressed by the Dragonborn’s victory over Miraak and had been expecting him ever since.

8 Astrid’s Compliment

When the player is kidnapped by Astrid as part of the introduction to the Dark Brotherhood questline, the Dragonborn must solve a bit of a moral dilemma. Three prisoners are bound and left to the player’s mercy. The guilty individual needs to be identified and executed before the Dragonborn can leave.

Although only one needs to be dispatched, the option to kill all three is possible. If done, Astrid will be impressed and deliver some unique dialogue. She will compliment the player by describing him as an “overachiever.” It’s a good way to score some extra points with the leader of the Dark Brotherhood.

7 Killing Eola For Verulus

Players who want to dabble in cannibalism are in luck in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. When visiting Understone Keep in Markarth, the Dragonborn will meet Brother Verulus, who needs someone to investigate the strange happenings in the Hall of the Dead. The problem is a cannibal named Eola and the player must decide whether to join her or kill her.

Joining Eola starts a Daedric quest that ultimately results in the acquisition of Namira’s Ring. Nevertheless, if cannibalism is too much to stomach, Eola can be killed immediately in Markarth. Doing so unlocks some unique dialogue for Brother Verulus. When told that a cannibal had been eating the corpses he will tell the Dragonborn to spare him the “grisly” details and let the matter rest.

6 Lucan’s Death & The Golden Claw

While visiting the Riverwood Trader the player will meet the proprietor Lucan Valerius. He gives a pretty straightforward side quest that involves the retrieval of a piece of stolen property, specifically a Golden Claw. Lucan’s sister and co-owner of the shop, Camilla, will give the Dragonborn directions to Bleak Falls Barrow to find it.

However, if a tragic accident should befall Lucan before the Golden Claw is returned, some rare dialogue can be heard. Camilla will accept the claw and end the quest, but will say “I guess Lucan will never see the golden claw again now.” A neat attention to detail that’s easily overlooked.

5 Meeting Durnehviir

All manner of spooky creatures inhabits the Soul Cairn, one of which is an undead dragon named Durnehviir. The player is forced to battle the dragon as part of the main questline in The Elder Scrolls V: Dawnguard. Once defeated, he becomes more talkative and his dialogue changes based on the status of the base game’s main quest.

One of the more interesting and less well-known lines can be heard if “Dragon Rising” is yet to be completed. Durnehviir will comment that the player has the soul of a dragon. The player character will respond in confusion, not yet aware of his Dragonborn powers. Durnehviir will state that it was his “instinct” to refer to the player in such a manner.

4 Fleeing The Battle Of Whiterun

The civil war that engulfs Skyrim looms large in the minds of its citizens. Naturally, it’s up to the Dragonborn to play the decisive role in deciding which faction prevails. One of the primary events of this conflict involves the battle over control of Whiterun.

Whether the player fights for the Stormcloaks or the Imperials, the Dragonborn proves to be the hero of the battle. But what if the Dragonborn is a gutless coward and flees the battlefield? Well, the player’s superior officer will have some choice words to deliver. General Tullius, for example, will speak of actions unbecoming of an Imperial soldier and will refuse to grant any kind of reward.

3 Impersonating The Thalmor

There are plenty of races to choose from when creating a character in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Playing as a High Elf, the race that composes the Thalmor, allows the Dragonborn to have a little extra fun during the “Diplomatic Immunity” quest.

It’s possible to fashion a makeshift disguise by finding some hooded Thalmor robes in the embassy. As an Altmer the player has almost free rein of the place as long as he acts normally. What is interesting is that one of the Thalmor guards can actually be tricked into leaving his post. By name-dropping Elenwen, the guard will scurry off and allow the Dragonborn to infiltrate the embassy in a sneaky manner.

2 The Jagged Crown Betrayal

Choosing a side in the Skyrim Civil War can be a difficult decision. As such, the game provides a bit of a fail-safe in case players are having any second thoughts about their original choice. When obtaining the Jagged Crown for their respective side, an opportunity presents itself for a stab in the back.

Delivering the crown to the opposite faction will unlock some unique dialogue from either General Tullius or Ulfric Stormcloak. Both will be initially suspicious of the change of heart. Ulfric, for example, will even suspect the crown is poisoned in order to assassinate him. It’s dialogue that’s rarely heard unless the Dragonborn is roleplaying as an untrustworthy scoundrel.

1 Aventus Aretino Attacked

Another hidden gem of dialogue the majority of players probably missed, getting this to trigger involves some unorthodox thinking. It has to do with Aventus Aretino, the boy who is trying to contact the Dark Brotherhood.

Instead of talking to Aventus, as instructed, attack him! Unlike other children in the game who have generic lines of dialogue when attacked, Aventus possesses a unique response. He’ll cry, “Wait! That’s not how this is supposed to work!” Another will be, “What are you doing? I thought we were friends!” A humorous little inclusion that’s easy to miss.
