Chris Evans Appears To Shut Down Rumor Of Captain America’s MCU Return

Nearly two years after Chris Evans retired from the role of Captain America with the release of Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Endgame, a report suggesting he may reprise the role in a future MCU project caught the attention of intrigued fans. However, Evans has seemingly debunked the rumor of Captain America’s return in a post on his official social media account.

Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Endgame concluded with Steve Rogers passing the Captain America mantle to Sam Wilson, a decision he made after traveling to the past on a mission to return the Infinity Stones to the point in time when they were taken and opting to remain in the ’40s with Peggy Carter. Of course, Rogers’ decision to return to the present as an old man and relinquish the Captain America moniker effectively concluded the First Avengers’ story arc, seemingly ending Evans’ tenure with Marvel Studios. Since then, Evans had admitted that he misses portraying Captain America, but acknowledged that he enjoys the freedom that comes without being bound to the role.

A report by The Hollywood Reporter indicated Evans has since warmed up to the idea of returning as Captain America and is close to sealing a deal to reprise the role for at least one, possibly two, Marvel Studios’ projects. The terms of the deal would reportedly see Evans’ return in a capacity on par with Robert Downey Jr.’s roles in Captain America: Civil War and Spider-Man: Homecoming as opposed to starring in standalone Captain America film. On the day news of his potential return to the MCU was reported, Evans took to his official Twitter account to write, “news to me.” The comment, which was accompanied by the shrugging emoji, suggested Evans is unaware of any such deal to return as Captain America.

Marvel Studios’ The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, the second Disney Plus series from the company, will explore the ramifications of Captain America’s decision to retire from his role. While Rogers personally named Wilson as his successor, Anthony Mackie recently indicated that the prospect of seeing his character take up the mantle was not set in stone. Potentially complicating the effort to replace Captain America is the introduction of Wyatt Russell as John Walker, a.k.a. U.S. Agent, an antagonistic character from the comics who had replaced Steve Rogers at one point.

Details on precisely how Evans’ Captain America might return are reportedly being worked out, though fans have already developed theories on how the character could come back without lessening the impact of his departure in Avengers: Endgame. A popular theory proposes Evans could portray a Captain America imposter in Marvel Studios’ Secret Invasion, a Disney Plus series adaptation of the comic book storyline of the same name in which the shapeshifting Skrulls assumed the identities of multiple superheroes.

With Marvel Studios set to explore alternate worlds and dimensions with WandaVision and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, it is possible that Evans could portray a different incarnation of Captain America as well. Of course, Evans could also be telling the truth about there being no plans for him to return to the MCU, though it wouldn’t be the first time an actor denied rumors of their involvement in a Marvel Studios’ project that turned out to be true.

Avengers: Endgame is now available on Disney Plus.
