Persona 5 Royal: 5 Recipes You Can Use To Fuse Mothman (& 5 Better Personas You Can Use It To Fuse)

Much of what attracts people to the Persona games involves the eponymous Personas and their references to the rich and varied mythologies of the real world. Ancient legends from Norse, Greek, and Japanese folklore, as well as many others, are embodied in the legions of supernatural forces one can ally themselves with in Person 5 Royal. Even some more modern myths proliferate this renowned JRPG series. One relatively recent tale that some may recognize is the creepy urban myth of the Mothman. This American cryptid spooked many people appearing as a large, winged creature with the proportions of an adult human, with obscure insect-like traits.

In Persona, Mothman is capable of some serious status ailments and changes representative of its nature as a shocking, confounding modern myth. Appropriately, its skills pertain to inflicting shock, which prevents enemies from making actions, as well as confusion, which makes targets throw away items or money. At level 33, Mothman is more of a middle-game Persona, though can be acquired relatively early with certain fusion combinations. In addition, Mothman can be used as a fusion component in summoning much greater allies, though at sometimes steep prices.

All kinds of mythical monsters flood the files of Persona 5, many of which can be used to fuse Mothman. One particularly ghoulish one hails from Hindu mythology: Pisaca. This abhorrent abomination is said to feast upon the corpses of humans. Those that see it are cursed to die within nine months. Accordingly, its skills pertain to inflicting despair, which causes its targets to be unable to take a turn and become incapacitated after three turns. It also has a few instant-death skills.

The canine half of this fusion originates from Greek mythology. Orthrus is the guard dog of the giant Geryon’s red oxen herd. He once did combat with the mighty Hercules during one of the hero’s legendary labors. This beast is capable of mid-level Physical and Fire attacks while also having rather high Agility for a level 21 Persona, making them a decent lead in many battles.

This is a mythical figure one can use Mothman to fuse when combining it with a common Slime. A deity from Japanese folklore, Kushinada was rescued by the storm god Susano-o when he temporarily turned her into a comb to hide in his hair. Yamata-no-Orochi, the titanic serpent monster with many heads, wanted to eat Kushinada like it ate all of her sisters, but Susano-o defeated it in an epic battle.

The lovely goddess is great at buffing and healing a party with skills like Amrita Shower, which cures all non-special status ailments of the whole party. As a neat bonus, at higher levels, she becomes immune to one of her weaknesses, Ice damage, with the passive skill Null Ice.

Choronzon is a New World demon, one said to be summoned by the famous occultist Alistair Crowley. However, Crowley was not able to control it, apparently, and it has since disappeared. Appropriately, Choronzon has skills involving raising evasiveness, as well as some damage-dealing Curse ones.

From Japanese mythology, and the Shinto religion, comes Nigi Mitama, the aspect for calm human thoughts, said to grant peace of mind to many. It specializes in healing and curing the party, and possesses a trait that conveniently reduces the SP cost to do so.

Together with Matador, Mothman can fuse to bring about the creation of a haunting Japanese monk from Buddhist mythology. Daisoujou was such a devout holy man that he died while fasting, though his body was preserved after death because of his immense abundance of faith.

This undead monk has numerous aspects that make him a great addition to any party. Firstly, he has a trait and a skill that allows him to drain SP from foes more effectively than most with this ability. Next, he can fully heal an ally with his Diarahan skill. Finally, he is one of the very few Personas in the game that has access to the Samsara skill, which has a high chance to kill all adversaries simultaneously.

For this fusion, an angel and demon merge to form the dreaded Mothman. Principality is a type of angel from Abrahamic mythology that is responsible for inspiring humans to greater thoughts, particularly for art and science. In combat, they dish out moderate Bless damage and can inflict the forget status onto foes.

Kin-Ki is a mighty oni from Japanese mythology who has a golden body. His flesh is said to be so hard and resilient that no attack can pierce it. As the myth he originates from indicates, he is not one that foes should attack with Physical damage, as he has skills that allow for him to counter said damage automatically and a trait that lets him double it.

By merging Mothman with Rakshasa, players can create Queen Mab. She hails from European mythology and has even been mentioned in Shakesperean plays. She is the archnemesis of the Celtic hero Cu Chulainn and has seen defeat at his hands many times.

Queen Mab shocks and roasts her foes in equal parts, thanks to her Electric and Fire skills. Her trait, Static Electricity, grants increased chances to inflict shock on foes that she electrocutes. With a high Magic stat and the Concentrate skill, which multiplies the damage of the next magical attack by 2.5, she can devastate enemy ranks.

Another combination for the mythic Mothman is the demon from The Lesser Key of Solomon, an old demonology text, named Andras merged with an Egyptian goddess. Andras is a Persona that has excellent fear-related skills that can be used to kill all adversaries at the same time with a life-ending Ghastly Wail.

On the opposite side of the thematic spectrum is Isis, a deity who is said to look after the dead. She once revived her son, the god Osiris, after he was slain by the dark deity Set. She also has proficient instant death skills, although of the Bless type instead, as well as a trait and some skills well suited to healing Joker’s party.

The result of fusing Mothman with Mithra is the legendary many-headed snake from Hindu mythology, Ananta. This serpent is a primordial being that existed before the creation of the universe. He is so massive that each of his hooded heads houses a planet.

They were also said to have the power to change size at will, which can be shown in their Growth 2 passive skill which grants bonus experience gain while inactive. Though, their most desirable aspect is that Ananta can unleash excellent Nuke-type damage on adversaries.

Here two figures of Japanese origin merge to make Mothman. Ara Mitama is the counterpart and reflection of the calm Nigi Mitama. It is the aspect of ferocious thoughts in the Shinto religion, said to inject feelings of boldness and bravery into people. It can do moderate Nuke damage, although it’s much better at inflicting the rage status, which drops many of the foes’ stats except for their Attack.

Fuu-ki is a strange-looking nearly-faceless oni that is said to harness the power of typhoons to whip and tear his enemies with. As expected, his skillset revolves around Wind skills, particularly those that slice foes to ribbons.

Players can use Mothmon and Kaiwan to fuse Byakko, the majestic white tiger from Chinese mythology that represents the west, metal, and the season of autumn. They are one of the four celestial creatures and is also known as the king of beasts.

Their prowess in battle is supreme, represented by their Counterstrike passive skill, which gives this fierce feline a 15% chance to reflect all Physical attacks. Their trait, Retaliating Body, sends this damage back at foes after being doubled for some serious impact. Additionally, Byakko can send forth a litany of soul-numbing ice attacks for heavy damage. With offensive traits like these, they are one of the best results for a fusion involving Mothman.
