2021 is here and just like many other games that come out within the past few decades, many new titles are about to be unveiled. Many of which are recognized whether it be shooters or in this case, the RPG genre. This year will absolutely be no exception as there have been plenty of games that fans are interested in playing whether it is the new Nier or a spin-off like Persona 5 Strikers. Nonetheless, there are some lesser-known games that might be missed by the general public. Some being more obvious than others.
As such, here are 10 RPGs from the east and west that are coming out of 2021. Although there are certainly plenty more. Note that some games might be known to some enthusiasts but might not be known to others.
10 Citizens Unite!: Earth x Space
Citizens Unite!: Earth x Space is a small but full of life RPG that is created by Eden Industries as a double pack. Coming out on January 28, 2021. Containing the games Citizens Of Earth and Citizens Of Space, they are fun games with a great following with many fans.
For the former game, the player takes control of the Vice President who rallies the rest of humanity in order to save the world. While the latter focuses on an Earth Ambassador who has to scour the galaxy in order to find the earth. Players will enjoy a 2D RPG filled with humor and a colorful world.
9 The Fellowship Saga
If players are interested in worlds that are akin to Dungeons & Dragons, then they would be curious about the game The Fellowship Saga. It’s a party-based RPG adventure that allows everyone and their friends to play in an epic adventure that goes throughout the realm. The game is turn-based and full of synergy. Coming out around March 2, 2021.
8 Sword Of The Necromancer
Sword Of The Necromancer is an indie RPG that is created by Grimorio of Games and is intended to be a strong dungeon crawler. The players take control of Tama as she goes through thick and thin in order to bring Koko back from the dead. As a result, the player is able to control the dead after they killed them as well as being offered local multiplayer. It comes out around January 28, 2021.
7 Cris Tales
Cris Tales is one of the most breathtaking new indie titles that are about to be released. Designed to be a love-letter to previous JRPGs, this game comes with turn-based combat and a really unique art style which is gorgeous. Players are able to control the past, present and future simultaneously in order to reshape the world to how the player sees fit to affect the story. Originally a 2020 release, it has been delayed for 2021.
6 Fallen Legion Revenants
Fallen Legion Revenants is a sequel to the original Fallen Legion which came out back in 2017. The world’s setting is filled with deadly miasma, as the rest of humanity flees to a floating castle. Similar to the previous game, the player controls a set of characters as they fight against a variety of monsters within a gothic-like castle setting. The game is set to release sometime in February.
5 Backbone
For those that are incredibly interested in detective stories or noir, then Backbone is the RPG to be looking forward to. The game takes place in a dystopic version of Vancouver and follows an extensive dialogue tree that many fans would love to enjoy. On top of that, the game is primarily a point and click adventure which perfectly fits the detective setting of the entire journey.
4 Atelier Ryza 2: Lost Legends And The Secret Fairy
Atelier Ryza 2: Lost Legends And The Secret Fairy is the sequel to the original Atelier Ryza game, which in itself is also part of the long-running franchise. Similar to the other games in the series, players get to explore a colorful luscious world as they are able to craft many forms of items.
Not only that, but the battle system is a fun turn-based combat system that will entice any fan of the genre.
3 Ocean’s Heart
Ocean’s Heart takes plenty of inspiration from games such as The Legend Of Zelda. Being a top-down action RPG, players control Tilia as she takes on a variety of monster contracts and explores the world. It has great action RPG combat and dungeons to explore. All within a world that is beautifully pixelated and harkens back to many classic JRPGs.
2 Ys IX: Monstrum Nox
Ys is having its ninth entry in the series. For newcomers to the franchise, Ys is one of the oldest action JRPGs to ever come out. Coming out roughly around the same time as the likes of Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy. It is heavily influential in the genre and is able to have firm longevity to this day.
Ys IX is the latest entry to the series and it is hoping to bring the same elements that brought fans into the franchise in the first place. From brand new locations and places to entertaining gameplay that have been synonymous with the series overall.
1 Poison Control
Poison Control is a JRPG that is being produced by Nippon Ichi, the same team that is responsible for the Disgaea franchise. This is a unique JRPG that is able to allow the player to share a body with the Poison Maiden. Being transported to hell, their goal is to purify the dastardly realm.
Not only that, but there are 5 major zones to go through. The player’s choices matter as depending on what decision they make will deeply affect the gameplay as well as the relationship with the Poison Maiden.
