After seven years of isolation, Scott Pilgrim vs The World: The Game is finally back on digital store shelves. It originally launched on August 10, 2010 in North America on PSN via PS3 with an Xbox Live version via Xbox 360 following a couple weeks later. It would later be delisted at the end of 2014 on both platforms due to licensing agreements drying up, which was and still is a common occurrence.
Players who bought the game could download and delete it as many times as they wanted, but new players could not purchase it. Not only that, but it was trapped on old hardware. History aside, for new players and returning ones, here is an easy guide on how to max stats on the first stage in less than twenty minutes.
5 The Characters
With this new edition of Scott Pilgrim vs The World: The Game, players can choose to play as six characters from the start. This includes Scott, Kim, Ramona, Steven, Knives, and Wallace. Prior to this Knives and Wallace were separate paid DLC characters. It should also be noted that beating the game with the main four characters each will unlock Nega Scott. So, in total, that is seven playable characters.
4 The Stats
Each character can level up to a max level of sixteen. Experience points, or XP as it is shortened in this game, is not just calculated from killing enemies, but from doing damage. Every move one does will gather XP. Leveling up only grants new moves and will not increase stats which is unlike most RPGs. Stats instead increase by eating food, or buying other goods from stores.
There are four stats in total. STR is for Strength and handles attack power. WP is Will Power and is basically the magic stat, or the MP of the game. SPD is Speed which significantly increases both attack and movement speed. DEF is defense and allows players to take more damage. These all max out at 100.
3 The Cheat
Now, this cheat works for all seven characters and it is extremely easy to pull off. From the start, pick a character and get to the shop district in the first stage which is about halfway through. This will take about ten minutes depending on how fast one is at beating up foes. Once there, clear the streets up until the Mini-Mart, which is in the second row of buildings. It’s here where players should buy a piece of Chewing Gum to go which costs $0.95.
For the purpose of this next part let’s go with the Nintendo Switch version. Go outside and enter the following commands: hold B and tap up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, A. This code input is the same for the Xbox One version and the PS4 version of the game as well in terms of button placement. That is to say, swap out B for X and A for Circle on PS4 and B for A and A for B on Xbox One.
This will essentially kill the player and spawn $50 worth of coins. The reason why the gum is important is because it will revive players without wasting a life. One could just do this without the gum, but once the life count hits zero, they will not be able to collect the coins so this is the easiest way.
2 The Process
This next part can get monotonous because all one has to essentially do is keep buying the gum and killing oneself all the way up until they hit a money count of about $650. This mean one has to do this thirteen times. From the start of the level up until the final transaction in total this may take anywhere from fifteen to twenty minutes and in total for all seven characters, that means it will only take a max of two hours and twenty minutes. It would probably take at least this long to do this traditionally with just once character if not longer.
1 Rental Advice
Anyway, once all the money is gathered go back to the beginning of the shopping district. The first store is a rental place called No Account Video. Scott has a late fee of $504.25. Once paid, all video rentals after this only cost $4.95. The first rental should be Seven Shaolin Masters. This gives a plus ten to all stats plus a bonus of one hundred XP. Buying this ten times will then max out all four stats.
The next rental should be Alone and Disturbed which will grant players 1500 XP. This should take about twelve rentals depending on how much leveling one did prior to coming into the store. If one isn’t sure if they reached max level yet, go outside and check stats. Why the menu can’t be pulled up in the store is beyond anyone’s guess.
Now, the only other rental worth something is The Mystical Head which grants a 1-Up after each purchase. And with that, the character should be leveled up to the max and the difference will be clear. This makes the game extremely easy for the next few levels. If one wants just a little boost, at least clear the late fee and dump about twenty points into each stat. That should even the odds for solo play without making things too easy but that is for the player to decide.
