DC Universe To Rebrand, Drop All Film And TV Content | Game Rant

WarnerMedia’s DC Universe experiment was a short-lived one. The service, which had hoped to be a hub for all things DC, was pushed by the company as the easiest way to access not only popular DC Comics, but new TV shows and DC films. As the company continues to pivot towards HBO Max, however, DC Universe is closing up shop, or at least, rebranding significantly.

Originally launched in September of 2018, DC Universe launched with special offerings like the R-Rated Titans show and attempted to entice subscribers with access to a huge catalogue of DC productions. On top of the original shows that were planned for the service like Swamp Thing and Doom Patrol, it also offered an extensive back catalogue of comics for fans to read digitally.

It almost instantly hit a snag, however, as one of its exclusive shows, Swamp Thing, was canceled before it even aired, and had it’s 13 episode order reduced to 10. While shows like Harley Quinn and Doom Patrol were well received, they weren’t enough to get people onto the service in the numbers that WarnerMedia wanted. Now the company is pivoting, moving most of its DC films, as well as much of its 2021 lineup, over to HBO Max as its primary streaming platform.

So what’s next for DC Universe? Well, the first order of the day is a slight rebranding. DC Universe will now be known as DC Universe Infinite and is described as a premium digital comic book service and community. It will host a large collection of DC comics and will continuously add new selections from the companies various lines over time.

As of January 21st, the service will have no original television content to speak of and will begin to focus entirely on the comics side of the business. For either $8 dollars a month or $75 a year, subscribers will get access to all the comics on the service, and existing subscribers will be given a special thank you voucher redeemable at the DC shop.

While it’s no doubt a removal of content, the streamlining of the subscription may help the service focus better on serving the comic community, while HBO Max can handle the television and film crowds. Hopefully, the rebranded service will offer a strong lineup of comics and heroes that allows it to be successful on its own terms as a digital comics subscription.
